WIthout using proton experimental Ubisoft Connect gets stuck on "looking for patches". When stopping the game upc.exe keeps running in the background, which needs to be killed manually to be able to start the game again.
Had to add "+devMode_enable 1" to the launch options to get past "FATAL ERROR: Loading unverified resource. Verify files with Steam or set "devMode_enable" to allow unverified resources:resour"
