Most UI text is small, as Valve have said themselves.
Sometimes, the game asks you to press Tab. You MUST map this to a button; there is no official controller equivalent button.
I recommend using the back paddles to map this to.
You NEED to go into the settings > controller settings > "switch to keyboard" in order to use the Tab button. Just switch back to "gamepad" controls afterwards using the same menu.
Also, when loading a save after starting the game again, you won't be able to move. BUT DON'T WORRY. Just go into the control settings and switch it back to gamepad controls again. Then you're good to go.

It might be easier to follow this from a browser on the Steam Deck. You need to go into Desktop Mode and install protontricks and flatseal from the Discover App Store. Afterwards open flatseal, select protontricks and on the right side scroll down to Filesystem and toggle "All System Files" on. Next open Konsole/terminal and type or paste this line to add an alias and call protontricks from terminal:
echo "alias protontricks='flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks'" >> ~/.bashrc
Close the terminal once you're done and open it back up again to have it register. Next type or paste the following lines one at a time:
protontricks 976890 d3dcompiler_47
protontricks 976890 d3dx9_43
Once it's done restart into SteamOS and launch the game. The default controller layout has no keys set, so press the Steam button go to controller settings and change the Official Layout to a Community Layout. You may want to change some of the buttons to your own personal preference.
Some screens and in-game menus require mouse input as the gamepad doesn't register. Very minor issue.
It might crash during longer sessions, as other reported this only happens after a few hours of playing.
You have to run use protontricks to make the game work: protontricks 1809690 d3dcompiler_47 d3dx9_43
Focussing another application will break the game and you'll have to restart.
Steam Remote Play works perfect.

EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION thats what pops up
protontricks 976890 d3dcompiler_47 d3dx9_43
Ran this command after installing protontricks:
protontricks 976890 d3dcompiler_47 d3dx9_43
One crash every 1.75 ish hours.
EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION
A black, fullscreened window spawns, followed by a small Error Message telling you 'Exception Access Violation'. You can only hit 'Ok' which quits the game.
The main issue is crashing near the end of a mission. It may be possible to avoid this by restarting the game every 2-3 missions.
PREFIX="/home/user/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/976890" winetricks d3dcompiler_47 d3dx9_43
The game freezes up when alt-tabbing and needs to be closed.
After some time of play the game will experience a crash. This happened twice in 3.8 hours of playtime. There's enough time to complete several missions in a row before this happens. Progress on the current mission will be lost but can be restarted.
Please note that the app id is now 976890. It may not hurt to check it yourself before applying winetricks/protontricks. You can find the id in steamapps/common/Hidden Deep/steam_appid.txt
exception_access_violation
game wouldn't start but worked after protontricks 1809690 d3dcompiler_47 d3dx9_43
After alt tabbing, game may turn white, or may flash, so if you have epilepsy then watch out.
On official discord someone posted this command: protontricks 1809690 d3dcompiler_47 d3dx9_43 which makes game playable.
ALT-TABbing makes game windows flashing and not playable.
