No problems out of the box.
This works great out of the box. I only play multi with friends, I'm hosting the games, no issue whatsoever. It's great. I love it.

Experienced issues the first time I tried the game, solution was to reinstall Steam and launch Steam from the terminal. Now it runs great.

No trouble, game launch smoothly. can play in multiplayer with 2 friends and 5 bots.

Works out of the box!
The only thing, which I needed to perform was tuning my graphics settings to maximum, as they were set to minimum.
Seems to be running perfectly so far

Has memory leak, gets killed by the OS.
RAM usage goes to 100% in a few seconds, shortly after the game and steam gets killed.
Juste fonctionne :)
nunca inicia el juego

gamemoderun %command%
Everything works as intended, right out of the box!

Crashes on startup. Click play, or run in terminal directly from executable, and shows the play button again after a second.
Tried all other fixes noted here, including all Proton versions incl. latest GE.

Run the game in a Wayland session, the Steam overlay works
Run the game in a Wayland session, the Steam overlay works
Make sure steam overlay is disabled or it will crash the game.

Starts good (not use Steam overlay)
Try to open Steam overlay - get game crash
Played with Proton 8.0-3.

turned off steam overlay and now the game starts and run perfectly
need to alt-tab out of the game, to reach steam chat to accept game invite
the game often won't boot if the steam overlay is enabled

Works perfectly

SKIPINTRO
chrashes on start up after launching once
Sometimes it won't launch/crashes on the intro screen, but after deleting overlay cache and verifying the game files it starts again

Borked, after splash screens and intro movie the game crashes before showing the menu
I tried several launch options and proton versions 5 and up, game sometimes crashes during xbox splash screen, sometimes after intro movie
none
make sure to have protonGe-8.1 for multi
you will need to launch the game with proton-GE-8.1 for the game and multi to work.
Nowadays the game works mostly exactly as expected. Just don't use the Steam Overlay here.
The game crashes, when you try to open the Steam overlay or try to open any link to the steam store from the main menu

Since my last post on this, an update to proton experimental has meant that I am now able to play multiplayer online and using the african maps with no issues whatsoever. Excellent job by whoever implemented the fix, and thank you for being so speedy on the uptake.
If you don't want to play the multiplayer and are only interested in single player, non-african DLC, then you'll be fine
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
I am unable to play any African or European maps. Attempting to load these maps results in 'Failed to load X'. Maybe related to: https://forums.ageofempires.com/t/due-to-the-borked-map-file-encryption-for-african-maps-linux-proton-users-are-unable-to-use-them-play-multiplayer/140245
I could not find or join any multiplayer games. The multiplayer game browser is empty and attempting to host a game/join a hosted game resulted in 'HOST REJECTED' for the person joining the host. I have tried multiple Proton versions, they are as follows:
- Proton 5.0-10
- Proton 6.3-8
- Proton 7.0-6
- Proton Experimental
- Proton-6.21-GE-2
- GE-Proton7-49
Additionally I have tried the workaround involving ucrtbase.dll replacement described here: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/5258#issuecomment-956351752 I have tried rebooting computer+router. I have checked my steam profile is public.
Multiplayer worked perfectly after changing to 7.0-5
Just switch the game to Proton 7.0-5 in compatibility and all seems to be working correctly.
Proton GE-Custom
Garuda Linux works fine

It's a bit stuttery, especially when moving the camera, and even on very low settings.
Unable to join or have other players join your own multiplayer games: "Host Rejected." Swapping to a GE Proton solved this issue.
Multiplayer worked only after using a GE Proton; other versions did not work at all.

Multiplayer impossible (Host Rejected)
Unable to join or host multiplayer games. Game displays "Host Rejected" message when trying to join game. Same message is displayed for other party when trying to join a game that I hosted.
Disabled/enabled VPN + firewall. Reinstalled. Used various proton (and GE) versions. No change. Refunded as it's unplayable with friends.
DXVK_ASYNC=1 gamemoderun %command%
When I don't use DXVK_ASYNC=1
, the animation of the game start is fine, but when I progress to the main page, it gets stuck
Runs like native
Runs just as good as Windows, if not better.
Maybe GE Proton is required for working video. Did not tried without and videos are played.
Plays quite well aside from the problems I mentioned. Picked it up in the steam sale and was really impressed with how well it played.
Game settings seem to reset on re-launch. For instance, if you enabled V-Sync, saved, quit the game, then launch it again, V-Sync won't be turned on. I experienced this with mouse anchor and V-Sync settings. Very minor gripe, might even be a general game bug rather than a Linux specific one, but I wanted to point it out.

very playable out of the box
Works particularly well, even on my low-spec system.
Local/online multiplayer was not tested
