Cutscenes completely broken
Dont attempt to play this on linux, play Devil May Cry HD Collection instead, and use the fixes for DMC 3 that are avaliable for that version

The game opens into a black screen. The intro starts playing but only sound can be listened. I used Proton Experimental Flatpak community build 7.0-20221027

Using Proton 7.0-2 flatpak community build (1650987458) com.valvesoftware.Steam.CompatibilityTool.Proton
The game only shows a black screen and plays the cinematic music in the background.
Cutscenes have a green overlay.
Recommended launch options for Style Switcher compatibility
PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d9,dinput8=n,b" %command%
To get Style Switcher working you will need to install Visual C++ 2017 with protontricks
protontricks 6550 vcrun2017
I recommend downloading my DMC3 Starter Pack here:
https://sharemods.com/yp47fygtzuwb/Devil_May_Cry_3_Starter_Pack_STEAM_EDITION_v2.7z.html
This is based on the DMC3 Starter Pack available on the PCGamingWiki, but I took the liberty to write an installation shell script so we don't have to use the Windows .bat file. Also, since we can't force MSAA for this game I have included mrhaandi's InjectSMAA in the archive.
worked like i remember under windows
cutscenes seem to glitch out, but gameplay was without issues
game only ran windowed, but resolution changes worked
Runs exactly like in Windows: with tons of issues
Any and all problems experienced in this atrocious port are just as they are in Windows. Nonfunctional gamepad config, two unchangeable double-bound buttons, funky graphics glitches, slowdowns caused by the music, etc. Playing on Linux is exactly the same, but the game does run and is beatable.
The Style Switcher Mod normally fixes all these problems and enhances the game, but it's installed with a .bat, which can't be executed on Linux to my knowledge.
Game loads and runs out of the box, except for controller configuration utility. Since DMC3 predated good controller support, configuration must be done with Steam or some external tool, which is not a small issue. It's not obvious which buttons and axes map to what in the game - for example, the L trigger on my 360 controller was mapped to the y axis of the left stick. Could be platinum if a controller could be configured with the game's utility instead of with guess-and-check outside the game.
input problems, not playable
Input issues make this game unplayable from the start
