Index controllers are a bit jittery in menus and in the inventory system.
Turn all performance stuff down to minimum to get playable frame rates
The game runs fine in GE 7.49 or later on my system. I was having trouble getting the script extender to work. I found a solution in this post
https://www.reddit.com/r/f4se/comments/nj7fwm/a_more_elegant_way_to_run_f4se_on_linux/
it is for F4SE but works for F4SEVR
Without doing this you will probably find (when using the script extender) that your saves have vanished and that starting a new game crashes the application.

needs WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" AND "faudio" installed with protontricks, otherwise dialogs and radio stations are missing.
If "Scopes" do not work --> Turn of TAA in the Performance menue
With the Valve Index, you need custom mappings or the game is basically unplayable. (Not a Linux issue, though.)
Fallout4 VR is not a master piece by Betheda on all plattforms and bugs are mostly ignored by them... You want mods to have the best experiences. Mods are generally working, I was able to use Vortex as mod manager as well (in a dedicated WinePrefx -- just make sure that this wine prefix can access the ini files by e.g bind mounts)

Almost all sounds in the game didn't play for me without adding WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b"
to the custom launch command.
The game runs almost at 90 Hz (dropping a lot when there's enemies or more complex areas) if I run it at the minimum resolution SteamVR settings let me set it to, on my GTX 1060 3GB. I'm also running some mods that supposedly help with performance, such as Wasteland 512, Optimized Vanilla Textures, and Fog Remover II. The game admittedly looks extremely pixelated, but it's playable. I also have a mod that adds FidelityFX contrast adaptive sharpening, which probably helps with the normal TAA blurriness. Without any AA, the low resolution is hilariously aliased, and my framerate was the same with and without. Check out reddit.com/r/Fallout_VR "Most important mods for fallout vr" thread for good recommendations, I use most of the top ones.
The game requires quite a bit of restarting to get it working, but once it launches properly, it does work.

No dialogue sounds by default but fixed with launch options WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" %command%
as said by previous reporters.
For valve index controllers you should really use openvr_api.dll
replacement from Oculus Touch controls emulation for Index or Cosmos controllers and apply appropriate bindings (see documentation and posts) which makes menus far more usable.
Good game but not full VR game. If you play it after Alyx you'll be disappointed by lack of interaction with world but it is not Linux related at all.
Apart from the two tips, this game runs flawlessly, specially compared to flatscreen Fallout VR.
I use Valve Index, so to get a proper behavior of the controller you must put the openvr_api.dll in the Fallout 4 VR steam folder -- you get it from here: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/41931 -- and then you also have to choose the appropriate controller bindings via steamvr menus.
In one of the beginning scenes, the salesman will ask your name and you will see a virtual keyboard to type it in. Or you won't, if you are using SteamVR beta. So, to pass this part of the game, revert back to regular SteamVR, after that I think you can go back to the beta because as I understand there are not many places where you have to type in the game.

last time I tried, it had audio issues, now it works very good. I also enabled several VR in compatdata/611660/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/Fallout4VR/plugins.txt if you use index knuckles controllers you very likely want to use this openvr_api.dll override, because with default knuckles config it is unplayable: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/41931
Not working at all.
Works without issues for me
It's probably a good idea to disable TAA, it gives a big performance boost

Tested with Valve Index on a system where it previously failed to run. Out of the box, most sounds are missing but those are fixed with launch options WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" %command%

Game won't start, hangs in black screen

On Valve Index, hangs on black screen.

Does not work in proton 3.16-7 Beta. Works with previous versions but most sounds seem to be missing. Music, Dialog, etc....

Wouldn't start at first, reboot fixed that. Framerate is comparable (bad) to Windows but I'm on a weak GPU 980Ti. Head movement caused a cross-eyed sensation.
