while this runs on the default proton configuration, you will need to tick the box to disable shaders the first time you run the game in order for protontricks to work on the game. It's not playable in this state entirely as collissions won't work and mission necessary visuals won't appear.
After launching and running it successfully like this, launch protontricks, default wineconfig, then install a windows dll or component. Select d3dcompiler_42, d3dcompiler_43, d3dcompiler_46, d3dcompiler_47, and d3dx9. After going through with this, wait for the window to reappear after it closes then go ahead and relaunch the game with shaders active. After this you can adjust how high quality you want the shaders, but everything should work as perfectly as it's ever going to at this point, have fun!
big ups to the comment by heretic at the bottom of this thread https://steamcommunity.com/app/340860/discussions/0/, I'm putting this up on protondb as confirmation and as an easy guide for everyone.
might be a bit finnicky selecting the resolution, you just need to hold your mouse pointer near the bottom to scroll down.
Does not start.
Cannot go beyond the initial configuration window that allows you to configure the game resolution and other things. After clicking on Start, the game will present an error window with some illegible text, expect for the word "DirectX".
I have tried different version of Proton, both standard and GE flavours, but always got the same result.

Missing text, no collision
The missing text can be fixed using Proton GE. About the collision bug, I dont know if it is from the game itself or Proton/Linux issue, but it's a problem for playing when your missile cant even hit a target.

While the game works in the sense that you can fly around, no text is rendered, which contains vital information such as ammunition counts and mission objectives, effectively rendering the game almost unplayable. Messing with DXVK and various permutations of WINE_D3D11 made no difference.

Runs fine. Turning on shader settings causes a crash on start. No text is displayed, making the game effectively unplayable. Controller works.

- The game is unplayable with the "Shader Settings" on. It appears an "Effect error" message with gibberish text. Otherwise, the game loads well.
- The game won't show text whatsoever.
- The 3D effects are unstable, making the gaming very unconfortable. Furthermore, if you minimize, some controls will be disabled, making the game unplayable.
