Works out of the box via Steam
the menu is not on full screen but when you got into the level it is, it's a game problem not related to steam deck
the map editor also work you just need to locate mapEditor in the local files and add it as a non-steam game and it will run perfectly.
Game Anthology works fine. No issues.
I used the following config fix to enable 1920x1080 resolution in the game.
In the game's base directory (which you can find by right-clicking on the game, selecting "properties", navigating to the "local files" tab, and selecting "Browse", which should open it in your default file browser), I located the file "config.cfg".
This is an XML file--if you open it in a text editor, it will look like (relatively intelligible) gibberish, if you search for an "XML Formatter" online you should be able to find a website that will allow you to paste or upload the text and then rearrange it to make it more legible.
Once formatted, use CTRL+F to find the first instance of "1024x768x32", the default resolution that the game is set at. Once formatted I found two instances at lines 60 & 64, under the tag <item editorytype="3" ... >.
To enable 1080p resolution I replaced both instances with "1920x1080x32" (the full tag read 1920x1080x32 on both lines), then saved the file.
I spent very much time trying to get this game to work on my modern pc. Tried different Proton versions and launch parameters. I tried changing graphics driver version but the result was still the same: unit stuttering and eventually crashing. My laptop running Ubuntu didn't have this issue so I think this depends on your hardware. Finally trying to rule out CPU issue, setting taskset -cp 0 [Pid] (where [Pid] is the Game.exe's ID) to terminal when running the game solved the issue. The game's affinity list was on my case 0-15 and that causes issues for such an old game. That command sets the game use only one. The drawback is that it needs to be given every time the game is launched but hey at least it's now very well playable on modern hardware. I verified this to work with GOG release using Lutris launcher and also using custom Proton version on Steam. Very likely works equally as well with the default Proton version. Don't forget also to change the resolution from the game's config.cfg file if you are playing with modern display. Further instructions can be found online. So glad that I'm finally able to play this classic RTS game on my Linux machine.
TL;DR. Set taskset -cp 0 [Pid] if you are playing with modern multi-processor PC and experiencing weird bugs and crashes.
(GOG version) Works good
Played GOG version with Proton 7.0-1.
Added 1920x1080 by following https://steamcommunity.com/app/313480/discussions/0/616188473126739763/ works better than on Windows 10 where this did not work for me before.
By default it will be in a 1024x768 resolution which I suggest changing to 1920x1080
Works really well, only audio seems to be a little bit broken but on different proton version everything worked fine.
I couldn't get a 16:9 resolution to work. The default resolution is, however, fine to use
Heck yea! Runs even better than on Windows. A very noticeable increase in performance in mods.
That's a known thing about this game, the solution depends from user to user, but you CAN emulate a virtual desktop to make it run in a window.
Mouse is a bit laggy but it's manageable, again it depends from user to user.
Game runs flawless and without any issues.
Completed 2 Tutorials without any problems.
I'm not sure how to do any of the above tweaks. I tried to install and run the game and it gave me a error report called "oops": The game crashed. The crash report folder named "2018-11-14_185136" next to game exicuteable. It would be great if you'd send to the developer of this game!
I'm am currently trying to send this report to the developer with a plea to get it working with Proton so I can buy the full version of the game.
Game has weird lags with Proton 3.7(stable) but runs completely fine with 3.7-6 Beta. It runs significantly better under Proton then it does natively on modern Windows machines.
The game runs great, no graphical issues, no performance issues, it runs completely stable. The performance issues people experience when running this game via Winetricks and PlayonLinux are absent.
better that windows xp in 2004
