Good News! Mods can be made playable with all textures, don't delete .bmp, convert to .tga or .dds!
deleted autosave instances in skirmish maps
skirmish autosave needs to be removed from maps
game can sometimes hit memory overload especially with mods
Incompatible image files can be converted to .dds and .tga. Some mods only require a handful of conversions. #valour can be easily made playable, follow error reports to find which files need conversion. When converting textures, sometimes there is a .tex file with the same name, open it and change the reference inside to match the new image file. (if you get an error like something.bmp is missing). I could also get spanish civil war mod to work, this took quite some effort though. .dds must be a certain size (divisible by 4) to work, if a .dds doesnt load try .tga format. .tga can sometimes be too big regarding file size, if game crashes without error message after caching entities, there might be some .tga that are too big. in that case those images can be downscaled and then they should load. Have not tested multiplayer with mods yet, i guess this would require another person to have the same game files.

Game crashes when autosaving or saving/loading manually (or just opening the "saves" screen with at least one save present). Must be patched to disable autosaves to be playable in single-player.
Need to apply a patch to not crash in single-player, and even then you won't be able to save/load, so each mission must be completed in one go.

Game crash on auto save in mission
Not playble

Game lag seems to not only affect game audio but all audio including discord. Crackling and audio lag present when in game.
Known singleplayer save bug
Unplayably low fps, in the 10-15 range
Same lag as in singleplayer, makes game practically unplayable for all players
The game insisted on using integrated graphics which may have made things worse. I tried downgrading the game, downgrading proton, using GE, changing nvidia prime settings etc with no success.

Sometimes, Unknown cause will make it run at 4 fps. Othertimes runs silky smooth
Once it's stuttering in framerate, only way to fix is to restart game.
Sometimes would horribly lag in fps or crash
overall working. local has more problems than multiplayer

Just some stutters here and there but nothing dealbreaking. It's common for Men of War though.
Works well even with RobZ mod!

As i mentioned autosave isnt working, it will crash your game
Singleplayer unplayable but it seems to be fixed after using this script: https://github.com/kanroot/men_of_war_assault_squad_2_linux

This game would be so good if it would work on LINUX!!!
volume for speech is low and is supressed by other audio such as shooting
Shadows behave oddly, for example, when a soldier runs and the sun shines on him, the shadow will be left behind him as a trail...
The game is unplayable. It crashes out whenever it wants to autosave itself, thus it is impossible to progress from the first mission at all!
Game randomly closes without any warning
as previously mentioned, shadow bugs, but since theres no save in multiplayer, it is rather playable, but sometimes it crashes out of nowhere without any warnings..
Steam Proton needs to adress this issue asap, there are multiple reports on this bug on proton's github and nobody answers it! The game works on windows, but I'm using linux for a good reason and not using windows for another good reason.
Whenever the game tries to save automatically (or you try to save manually) the game crashes, because it wants to create a screenshot of the actual game view, but it instead creates a 0byte file and boom, self tee-ball. I used this guy's workaround https://github.com/kanroot/men_of_war_assault_squad_2_linux
but then it never ever saves your game, which was ok for a temporary duct-tape quick fix (WAS) because 6years have passed and this isn't still fixed officially by Valve's Proton team.
Now when I use this script, the game progressed well without crashing from wanting it to save (because it no longer saved), but then 5-6mins into the game and the game just randomly closes itself with a "sound" error and an "unknown level of volume thickness" error lol. Yes I'm banging my head into my desk.
I literally tried everything. Here's what I tried + many other things that are not listed here but listed on bottm of this protondb report - an exhaustive list:

Here's my report on VALVE'S PROTON GITHUB and the ticket was opened by ghost 6 (SIX!) years ago, and still no solution.
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/626#issuecomment-1975151295
I contacted them on discord, no answer.
I tried to contact GloriousEggroll if he could fix it, because he's a "wizard", but got no response.
I really want to enjoy this game on linux, but I just cant, and I'm crying a river now :(
Did all my best I could since a week, researchingthe whole internet for solutions but no luck. Tried this on different kernel versions too, no luck.

gamemoderun %command%
Saves do not work and will crash the game
FPS is not as good as Windows but still well beyond playable
s/o https://github.com/kanroot/men_of_war_assault_squad_2_linux. Using nvidia-lts drivers and GameMode.

Single player saves are not working, and the game crashes, I fixed it by following this guide, but you can't save or load missions.
Fullscreen not working, only borderless mode
Sometimes during a mission the fps dropped to less than 10
Game runs with GE proton, needs additional config

gamemoderun %command%
Runs perfectly just like it would on Windows
failed to load with mods
I can't actually play mods, which sucks, and the only reason why I play. Just crashes and gives me an error.
gamemoderun %command%
it is basically unplayable half the time, a fun game ruined by poor coding and bad compatiblity
Game would crash out of the blue on half of the gamemodes that I play,
Mods are completely useless, as they simply cant be used with the game as they crash the game when you try and boot it up. This sucks alot as mods make the game better by a lot a lot
As previously said it randomly crashes in games over 2 players constantly
I hope Men of War:2 is more compatible than this game
Works great
I made a script that enable play single player mode in men of war assault squad 2, read the instructions.
Despite the problems I am still able to have fun with this game most of the time, even though I can only play vanilla and multiplayer.
Singleplayer missions (apart from skirmish as there are no saves there) are out of the question, as any save that is made creates a .jpg thumbnail of the match, which appears to cause a crash.
May randomly crash during an online match regardless of what is happening ingame
Most mods are unplayable - Some won't let you load into the main menu (for example UMV 40k), map thumbnails can cause the same crashes that happen when a save is made and modded files may cause a crash when loading into a match.
Noticeably lower than in Windows, it can crash on the latest version of Proton (6.3-5).
The game shows terrible performance at the start of the gameplay
May not terminate when clicking the "exit game" button
Can't run single-player due to auto-save crash

El juego crashea al guardar
Se congela al empezar la partida con Proton 6.3-4 y crashea al guardar con Proton 6.9-GE-1
I did not test singleplayer, but multiplayer works excellently!
Not really playable without possibility to save. But that depends on individual point of view.
Save & load gane still crashes in single player campaign.
I haven't tested multiplayer.

Multiplayer works fine, Single player is unplayable
Well known single player bug

Crashes on startup
The game won't even start. I see the splash screen and that's it.

Crash on save and autosave. @Teodosio 's work around for singleplayer autosave removal works great.
Mods won;t load because of some .bmp / .jpg files. Check below for @Liemaeu 's report to get a better idea on how to fix them. I have also composed this bash script based on @Liemaeu 's comment: https://gist.github.com/orfibus/dfacf026886b5d27c5c2c2f52df23995
! Use the script at your own risk, I have no responsibility for any damage it may cause. I am not an experienced bash scripter. Review the code before running it. ! Any feedback will be appreciated.
Sava game bug. I was able to run the single player missions (at least the first, so far) by disabling autosave in the mission definition.
- I decompressed the map.pak file (it is a zip file) and deleted it, leaving only the decompressed directory inside ".local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Men of War Assault Squad 2/resource".
- I entered the directory "map/single/01_usa-skirmish/00b_usa-hurtgen/".
- I edited the file "0.mi" (the mission definition) and I removed all the blocks named "x:autosave/xx" (from curly bracket to curly bracket).
- The first USA mission because playable; you have to play it in one sitting, since autosave is disabled and normal save will crash the game.
- Repeat the edit for the other missions to be able to play them.
Crashes when you save the game, impossible to play singleplayer

Too much tinkering with game files to play some games.

APP_ERROR: Resource "/directory/autosave/screenshot.jpg" is not a valid supported image.
Frequent crashes/freezing and inability to save.
Without mods, it freezes somewhat frequently (I'd say about 20% of the games I play) with no error message. Typically happens in the beginning of the game, but it has happened at least once probably about 10 minutes in. Have to kill it within the terminal.
I've only used RobZ Realism so far on multiplayer, but it seems to crash at the end of loading screen when attempting to load .bmp format images. Per another user's advice, I tried to remove all of the .bmp images from the mod, but it ends up failing to load as it is seen as corrupted. Whether this is due to the way I unzipped and rezipped the .pak files to modify them, I'm not sure. The error I see is: APP_ERROR: Resource '/entity/humanskin/ger-volkssturm/c_usa_harper_eye_c.bmp' is not a valid supported image (eBitmapImageStd.cpp, 95)

To fix the ".bmp is not a valid supported image" image error: Go to $HOME/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Men\ of\ War\ Assault\ Squad\ 2/resource/, open the interface.pak (with your archive manager) and delete the splash.bmp and splash_editor.bmp files.
To get Galaxy at War Mod working: Go to $HOME/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Men\ of\ War\ Assault\ Squad\ 2/mods/star\ wars\ -\ galaxy\ at\ war\ -\ public\ version/resource/, open the gaw_game.pak (with your archive manager), go to interface and delete the splash.jpg, splash_editor.jpg and splash_eng.jpg files. You also need to got to interface/scene/human and delete the health_color.bmp and power_color.bmp files, to interface/scene/vehicle and delete the fuel_color.bmp file. To get the pre-build maps to work you need to delete more .bmp files (the error message when you try to load them tells you where the .bmp file is in the gaw_game.pak).
If anybody knows how to script that (deleting every .bmp file in a .pak archive) please let us know!
The normal game still crashes on (auto)save because of the screenshot.jpg. But the editor works fine!

Autosave will crash the game, making its single player practically unplayable
Crashes on autosave

Campaign unplayable due to crash on save
Crash at save, auto-save not able to be disabled so basically unable to play the campaign.
Only because of the save game issue.
Autosave craches singleplayer.
Crashes on save/autosave
Singleplayer can't be played due to autosave bug
Yes, but the image bug it's so big and ruins a really big part of the game
Because when you save a game the game takes a screenshot of the game, that screenshot is the preview of the saved game and uses a unsupported format of image and crases
When you try to load a saved game, select some maps, whit mods and that's because the game uses a unsupported format type of image for the "mini image" that is the preview
Yes, whit the physics, but it's also in windows
If you want to play the camping you must to play in multiplayer or lan

Autosave doesn't work, simply launch a LAN game (no autosaves) and you can play a full round against AI. Have not tested online though.

Crashes on autosave. Tried with GloriousEggroll's proton version and default one but no success.

Crash on auto save. Beside, I don't the graphical driver works effectively: it's an old game but still I cannot run it smoothly under the LOW graphical settings

Singleplayer campagain still works until autosave. Mods are causing .bmp image file errors.
