I was able to play this game both on the Deck by itself and with an external monitor and mouse. Both worked flawlessly.
Touchscreen is required. Set resolution to 1280x800.
No audio out of the box on deck, but may work on other systems with hardware details that can be fixed/changed.
Launcher is easy to read, but requires touch screen (touchpads don't work).
Requires navigating the launcher each time. Unknown of launch options exist to bypass launcher or fix audio on Deck.
The Linux version of this game doesn't work. The options screen doesn't seem to have the right font so all the text is just rectangles and then pushing beyond that screen never launches the game.
What does work is focing the Windows version to install by setting the game compatibility to use Proton. From there you'll want to load the settings window first and adjust the resolution and the controls.
The trackpads don't work by default in the settings window, and I could not get the touch screen to select the Xbox 360 controller, so I just plugged in an external mouse, set the controls to the 360 controller and saved. From there, it should work just fine on the Steam Deck without any messing around.

The native Linux version of the game launcher window text is entirely unreadable. Forcing the use of the Windows version with Proton 7.0-1 works around the issue.
The game defaults to keyboard and mouse controls, but it is possible to switch to controller in the launcher window : it has full controller support. The game runs consistently at 60fps with default graphics settings.
Proton-7.0rc3-GE-1
Use XOW driver for wireless Xbox controller and launch game to "settings" then set controls from keyboard to "Steam controller"

Issues with native controller support and 60 fps cap, hope proton gets this working some day without these limitations
audio was turned off when switching between native and steam play
can not get to the options menu, locked at 640x480
the fire mode was not accessible in native version, and steam play did not work for controller at all because the settings menu crashed
crash during initialization, game would load anyway but could not get into setup
