The lag is not the fault of the computer, but rather the single game server remaining that needs to be rebooted frequently.
Sadly despite the game running fine, it is simply on its last leg in terms of server performance and playerbase. I enjoyed the nostalgia, but I can't recommend it to anyone who hasn't already put time into it.
Keep in mind that the launcher is so old that there are numerous issues with making an account, though: When signing in, you must make an account on their website. The launcher will take you there.
- Do not use any special characters in your email, such as + for gmail alternate aliases.
- Do not use a password greater than 8 characters, and use only A-Z 0-9. Special characters do not work with the launcher and will always produce "invalid login".
Otherwise, the internal updater has some minor text issues which affects nothing and it works fine. Fun game back in the day. Still fun now, but every action takes a while to process. Fine if you're patient.

I couldn't get this working under Steam with Proton. I did eventually get it working stand alone by following the steps here: https://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=36199 The game runs and is playable. But the performance is not as stable as windows and my FPS seems to jump from 50 - 60. Sometimes down to 40s. I dual boot with windows on this machine and can get a steady 60FPS.
It doesn't run via steam. Only by following the steps at https://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=36199. It requires ie 8 and media player to be installed first via Wine.

Follow the instructions provided by vulthoom below. It'll only work with Proton-4.6-GE-1, and you'll need to use winetricks to install ie8, otherwise it won't launch at all. Once I got past the setup, it worked great though. It runs just as well as it did for me on Win10, if not a bit better.
A minor amount of lag, but according to other players at the time, it was pretty widespread a most likely the fault of the server itself.
Fails to launch, with or without using the dedicated GPU. All I get is a crash report.
prime-run %command%
Used Protontricks to install ie8 and shockwave and it runs perfectly fine.

By using a 32bit wine prefix, with an old version of GloriousEggroll, I was able to update and run this game flawlessly. Check the report by vulthoom for instructions. I did not experience any issues with fonts as they reported, my experience was perfect.
tar -xf Proton-4.6-GE-1.tar.gz
mkdir -p ~/.local/share/Steam/compatibilitytools.d
mv Proton-4.6-GE-1 ~/.local/share/Steam/compatibilitytools.d/
rm -f Proton-4.6-GE-1.tar.gz
rm -rf ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/113420/pfx
Restart Steam, set Proton-4.6-GE-1 for Fallen Earth.
Launch Fallen Earth, it will crash, that's fine.
mv ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/113420/pfx/drive_c/Program\ Files\ (x86)/Steam ~/
rm -rf ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/113420/pfx

mv ~/Steam ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/113420/pfx/drive_c/Program\ Files/
Launch Fallen Earth, it will now successfully run.
Slight font issues.
The came from the steam discussion forms for the game: https://steamcommunity.com/app/113420/discussions/0/3180107161588145998/#c3180107352889428828
Borked, most likely due to the custom launcher
It simply crashes on startup. As far as I know, this game uses a custom launcher to execute the game. It appears that this launcher simply refuses to work on Linux, though I could be mistaken. Pretty sad, I kind wanted to try this game out after watching the video by Josh Strife Hayes. Especially now, as the player count seems to have increased to over 200 concurrent players.
Fails to run the game giving you a Crash Report prompt.
Crashes on launch, then shows a crash report screen

The server for Fallen Earth has been taken offline, indefinitely.
The developers of Fallen Earth decided to shutdown all servers for Fallen Earth due to low player count. However, they did promise a reboot at some point in the future.
Still crashes on launch. Exception Access Violation error.

Crashes on launch, then shows a dialog to send a crash report.

It probably wont start without direct x because when the game launch there are many dx processes in system monitor.

Crashes on start, only shows up a dialog for error submission.
