%command% > logfile.txt
Tooltips sometimes renders blackbox over the text box.
Previous version of the RPGMaker MZ would only running with specific older versions of proton and would have some type of resource leak as you opened and closed windows and drop down menus. From my testing which wasn't extensives, i am fairly confident this is a non-issue now with 9.0.4.
For those of you that want to run your games (not editor) localally, you can install nwjs and use the following command nw --args --nwapp=./
or download a copy of nwjs from the offical site, and copy paste it into the game library. That said, i've had few issues running RPGMaker MV or MZ games with WINE/Proton.
Works perfectly, including playtesting.

It works perfectly on Proton Hotfix (Everything works well, playtest too). Previously I used Proton version 6.3-8 but there I had a problem with something like input lag.

Any time there's a drop down menu, the program crashes
I tried add %command% > logfile.txt
to the launch command to get a log of the crash, but the generated file contains no data.

The editor starts out fine you wouldn't notice anything is wrong but then over time menues start to take longer and longer to appear. The only remody to this is restarting the editor.
Using any version other then proton 6.3-8 suffers from tool tips showing up blank.
It is almost there just a few more bugs to work out and this will be perfect.
This is my first time playing or trying this game/program, thus i don't know if it contains any OST's or what not.
Black block pop's up when i hover over an option(the description of options pop's up as a black block with no text). The game will crash when this happens.
The game/program will crash, very frequently.
The game will crash everytime you hover over an option for about 1 or 2 sec and even then, you can't see the text at all.
Besides the bugs that i've mentioned, the game/program, thus far works great. Please keep in mind that this is my first time with this program and it is the first time i've ever even opened up.
When fullscreening, there's a noticable black square in the center of the screen
- Noticable slowdown in editor, notably when swapping toolbar, editing database, or eventing.
- Mild-to-moderate frame drops in playtesting, notably when in different menus and when navigating large maps. The worst these got were dropping to about 45FPS average.
- Significant performance issues in battle, a side-view ATB with the default boss enemy/hi-monster would occasionally drop to about 30FPS, especially when magic involving particles was used.
- Fullscreening also caused performance issues, with average FPS dropping to anywhere between 30 and 45FPS in the overworld. Less noticable in other scenes.
Editor is unexpectedly slow, taking a second to open a different section of the toolbar and being noticably slow in database and eventing. Only issues in playtesting are some small-to-moderate frame drops in different scenes (Menu, Saving. Sprinting across a max-size map also caused inconsistent frame rate. The worst it got outside of battle in both of these instances was about 45FPS.) Most noticible in battle, where a side-view ATB against the default boss enemy/hi-monster dropped to around 35FPS average.
Steam time is innacurate. Pre-ordered and had used it on windows.
Everything works out of the box.

works perfectly out of the box
In fifty hours of usage, the editor has crashed exactly twice. The game previewer has never crashed. A nearly flawless experience.
You can play the "game" by creating your own RPG, but you won't be able to playtest it, so I consider it unplayable.
The only audio you would hear is from the Playtest screen, but since that is borked, there is no audio
- tiny white box artifact when using the tutorial
- Playtest screen pops up for a second and then disappears (supposed to load your game)
- In the tutorial when you open the database, the program slows down (regardless of hardware) and has ghosting of the cursor/tutorial window (think of old-school solitaire ghosting on Windows)
- When you click Playtest, the pop-up window takes a few seconds (but then goes away)
- If there's no playtest screen, then there's no RPGMaker "game"
I bought both the RPGMaker MZ & MV pre-order bundle for me and my son. I figured it might not work on Linux, but that's okay as I can make it work in Win10 and maybe a VM.
I contacted the developers via email, and after a few exchanges, it was very clear that they had no desire to support native Linux development or supporting Proton/SteamPlay. When I called them out on the fact that RPGMaker MV did in fact support Ubuntu at least (14.04), they told me that "they no longer support MV and don't support Linux on MZ".
The best bet to get this fixed is with Proton.
This game (MZ) and the previous game (MV), were both tested on two systems -- Ubuntu 20.04 & EndeavourOS (arch-based Linux).
For this game (MZ), here are the main problems (both Ubuntu & EOS experienced the exact same problems):
- tiny white artifact when using the tutorial
- when typing in text for the tutorial, have to click text box multiple times for it to register that you are selecting the text box (have to fight it to type)
- when doing the first tutorial, the "stone cave" icon disappears when you go to the next step. Not sure why.
- Playtest feature does not work
