Minor graphical artifacts aside, game worked perfectly out of the box throughout my 100% achievement run
Proton-5.9-GE-8-ST GloriousEggroll
Proton-5.9-GE-8-ST
There are times when the death animation of monsters produce minor graphical artifacts when their remains/limbs/what-have-you are scattered into pieces. The artifact shows up as if the pieces are still connected together, and it looks like the remains are being spaghettified.
I used Proton 5.9-GE-8-ST for the whole run, and then I also tested using vanilla 5.0-10 and 5.13-4 in postgame. One difference I observed is that using the GE version will play the 505 Games intro video on game start, while the vanilla versions do not. Based on what I have seen in my playthrough using the GE version, the game does not seem to use videos in any cutscene, so anecdotally, the vanilla versions will probably give you a comparable experience.
Works great out of the box, but alt-tabbing on fullscreen mode might cause problems
My desktop environment is GNOME 3.34.2, and I am running the game on fullscreen mode 1920x1080. I can alt-tab just fine to view other running applications and other workspaces, but the moment I switch to another window, the game just exits. If I run the game on windowed mode, alt-tabbing to another window does not cause the game to crash.
Context
I have only played the GDI campaign for around 2.5 hours, and I have not observed other problems so far.
Works great albeit with some incredibly minor issues
Sometimes there is very subtle crackling in the audio while selecting stuff in the character menu, and I seem to get them when I ALT-TAB too much. I cannot reliably reproduce it, and the crackling also disappears quickly.
The screen "tears" very seldomly, and it is visible as a horizontal black line that vanishes quickly. I only ever observed these "tears" to occur when moving in the overworld map.
Context
I am not sure whether or not the incredibly minor issues I observed are issues of the port itself. I have only played this game on Linux for a significant amount of time, and I have played up to the point where the gang is about to leave the 1st continent.
Other observations
SE already released a patch on March 24, 2020 which fixed the text overflow issue caused by the Feb 28, 2020 update. I have not encountered problems related to this so far.
Finished the game entirely using Proton on 2560x1080 resolution
I have not yet tested post-game content (Iron Giant superboss), but I highly doubt that there will be significant problems at this point. Based on my experience, this game deserves a PLATINUM rating.
The minor issues I mentioned in my previous report seems to be gone as I have not observed them recently. Perhaps recent OS/Nvidia/Proton updates inadvertently addresses those issues.
There was one trivial issue I observed though. Sometimes when trying to close the launcher, Proton/Wine will spit out a "game is still running and you might lose progress" sort of warning even though I have already exited out of the actual game. I cannot reliably replicate this behavior, but I have not encountered data whenever that happens.
Works great out of the box
Context
I have played this game on Windows, and playing this game via SteamPlay feels very much the same. I started a new game, and I have cleared Fuse Man's stage with no problems so far.
Works great out of the box
Context
I have played the game on Windows, and I cannot tell the difference. I created a new game and cleared Fuse Man's stage without problems so far.
Works great out of the box, even better than Windows w/ FAR mod fix
Context
I have played the Windows version w/ FAR mod in its entirety, and I will replay this game using SteamPlay, so hopefully I can provide good feedback and comparisons over the long run. For this report, I have only played up to the point when 2B first meets 9S in-game which is just right after the 1st boss of the prologue.
Standard 1080p observations
I can get stable 60fps on High Presets with AA turned off. Ambient occlusion setting already has its own AA implementation that conflicts with the dedicated AA setting if turned on. I have not yet tried turning the dedicated AA setting on.
Ultrawide 1080p observations
The one good thing about the Windows version w/ FAR mod and ultrawide fix is how the aspect ratio is maintained for pre-rendered cutscenes (centered with black bars on both sides), but HUD and menus sort of look off/hackish.
Using SteamPlay, the game is beautifully rendered in 21:9 out of the box, HUD and menus too, but the downside is that pre-rendered cutscenes get stretched. As for performance, since 21:9 is 30+% more pixels vs 16:9, I can only achieve stable 60fps on my hardware if I also reduce texture filtering from 16x to 8x.
Other observations
Pre-rendered cutscenes run at 30fps, but the playback is way smoother here VS Windows w/ FAR mod.
Worked perfectly out of the box on Proton 5.0-10 all throughout my 100% achievement run
Proton 5.13-1 was still new when I started playing, and I typically skip X.X-1 releases until they have matured, so I used 5.0-10 exclusively for this run, and it is very stable.
Proton-5.21-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Proton-5.21-GE-1
PS3 and PS4 controllers were not detected by the game if Steam Input is turned on as the Origin client does not seem to play nice with it. I turned it off, and the controllers work either via USB or Bluetooth.
By all accounts, the game seems to be an unoptimized port, and FPS drops and stuttering in Windows have also been reported by others. The stutters were more severe the first time I visit a new area, so it might be shader compilation issues. Other than those occasional issues, gameplay is more than smooth enough that parrying is not affected negatively. I used __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_SKIP_CLEANUP=1
, 60 fps cap, VSYNC turned on, Dynamic Resolution Scaling turned off, and Steam Overlay turned off. Also, it is best to run this on an SSD.
I used Proton-5.21-GE-1 for the whole run, and then I also tested using vanilla 5.13-4 in postgame. One difference I observed is that using the GE version will play the intro video on game start, while the vanilla version does not. Based on my playthrough, the game does not seem to use videos for cutscenes, but the Jedi skill previews might be affected.
