Recommended protontricks tweaks didn't work for me.
Tried mfc42, winxp, l3codecx, and corefonts. Also tried PROTON_USE_WINED3D9=1 in launch options. No dice. Launcher throws up a warning that my computer has 0GB of graphics memory (obviously false), plays the startup videos just fine, and immediately crashes when it tries to go into the main menu.
Nvidia ruins everything again
Normally works fine as everyone else here can attest, but the latest Nvidia drivers seem to have broken it, at least on OpenSUSE. Now it just throws a crash report, doesn't even TRY to boot. Had to perform a system rollback (OpenSUSE is mercifully generous with automatic snapshots) to get it working again. Buy AMD if you're on Linux, people...
Runs beautifully under 5.0-8. Xbox One controller worked out of the box.
Custom music won't play, otherwise perfectly fine. Trying to use custom music also prevents the game from fully closing when shut down, had to kill it with the system monitor.
Has a couple hitches, but works pretty well. MAKE SURE YOU ADD *PROTON_USE_SECCOMP=1 %command%* TO THE LAUNCH OPTIONS! (See end of report)
Stable 60 FPS at 1080p is out of reach with a GTX 1660S, even on low graphics settings. On Windows, 60 FPS is no sweat even on high. Further, it seems there is much less performance difference between low and high settings on Linux than on Windows - I get maybe +10 FPS by going from high to low, while the delta on Windows is more like 50. Maybe an AMD card would work better, but definitely expect sub-par performance if you're running an Nvidia card.
If you don't use Glorious Eggroll, in-game videos are liable to crash the game, and some cutscenes don't work (not a crash, they just won't play). There is one video that WILL crash the game even with GE, at the end of the base (non-Iceborne) story - when you get back into Astera, the game gives you a video advertisement to buy Iceborne, which will cause a crash to desktop. It also appeared in the main menu on startup. You just have to mash past it and get lucky. I used both the mouse and the controller together for optimal mashing. Once you get past it, it should stop appearing and you'll be good to go.
Controller detection can also be spotty depending on your distro - for me, it works perfectly on Zorin OS and OpenSUSE, but refused to detect on first boot on Manjaro, detecting just fine if I then restarted the game. Seems Solus has the same problem.
Also, folks, it is absolutely imperative that you add PROTON_USE_SECCOMP=1 %command% to the launch options (right-click game > properties > set launch options). I'm not sure exactly what it does, but if you don't, Denuvo will slap you with a 24-hour softban, so you won't be able to boot the game up even if you put it in after a first attempt.
Origin ruins the day once again
Installed smoothly, first-time setup insisted on installing Origin. It looked like it might work, since I was able to pick install settings for Origin and click install, but it got stuck at some point and the installer locked up. Tried restarting the process to no avail, won't even bring up an install dialogue for Origin anymore, just hangs on the first-time setup. Refunded. I hope Steam will reconsider its policy of tolerating third-party software like this in the future.
Did not install
Steam actually closes when clicking "next" in the install window. Forcing Proton did nothing to help. Very confusing.
