Ran the following, adapted from in some comments below.
git clone https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install.git /tmp/mf && \
WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/738520/pfx" \
PROTON="$HOME/.steam/steam/compatibilitytools.d/GE-Proton7-28/" \
/tmp/mf/mf-install.sh -proton
I was able to launch without tinkering, but get stuck like in most reports after the intro video. Changing to GE on its own didn't help. The mf-install
seemed to be key. After that, the game ran perfectly.
With the default installation, I had problems with performance on planet. These disappeared after installing dotnet48 with protontricks, as described below. I also installed some performance plugins with Plugin Loader so I could increase grass render distance.
When launching by default, on Proton Experimental, and on Proton GE, I got a LOT of crashes.
I fixed these by switching to Proton 7.0-3, installing dotnet48 and faudio through protontricks. dotnot48 fails to install properly on 7.0, so I had to first switch to 6.3, install dotnet48, then switch back to 7.0. I don't know if faudio was actually necessary.
From a little Googling, this may only be related to nvidia GPUs and/or AMD CPUs.
After this, ran like a dream.
Plugin Loader, and lots of mods are working fine on Proton 7.0-3 with dotnet48 installed.
