It took me a while to come around to this game but I decided to play it on a whim, f2p horror game, what could go wrong? =)
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="opengl32.dll=n,b" %command% +gl_twopassdyn 1
Sometimes after hitting "Play" in my Steam Library, the launcher will boot up and ask for your preferred resolution and some other stuff, sometimes the game glitches out and just has a permanent loading screen that never loads; but if you hit escape it will bring up the menu like (new game/load game) but selecting any of these will kinda not do anything and you have to like force close the game and relaunch it again
Sometimes when alt-tabbing the game and tabbing back into it my keyboard would desync and like Simon would just walk in a random direction without me pressing any buttons - hitting the esc button / pausing the game would "fix" it
Some kind of weird lighting issue where Simon's phone flashlight will not produce any light or the Glock tactical light will not show any light and like I had to use "gl_monolights 1" in game via developer console as some segments were hella dark and I could not see what is like 5 ft in front of me but running this command made the game super bright for like god knows what reason, lmao it was either complete darkness or like hella bright - I haven't tried installing the DLL files people are suggesting but running these launch options in Steam game properties for Cry of Fear "WINEDLLOVERRIDES="opengl32.dll=n,b" %command% +gl_twopassdyn 1" solved my problem with the lighting
mangohud %command% AMD_VULKAN_ICD=RADV RADV_PERFTEST=aco,sam,nggc,ngg_streamout,gpl gamemoderun %command% -fullscreen -dx12
There are occasional stutters or random lag spikes but I think that's just DBD being DBD
I don't know if it's because I'm playing on a laptop but there were some minor tweaks I had to make before I could get DBD to run how it ran on Windows (which I have played on the same hardware before switching to Arch Linux)
as of today (Oct 2023):
Proton 8 or Proton Glorious Eggroll are probably best for DBD; I could not play DBD with Proton Experimental as the game was lagging every minute or two (which doing stuff like running in a straight line or hitting a skill check kind of impossible, stuff like killer power going off or a gen popping also made the game lock up or freeze frame) and the character models were super glossy and bright and kinda strained my eyes by just looking at them
However, with proton 8 (available from your steam client) or proton GE (non Steam version, requires you to enable AUR repo and obtain ProtonUp-qt via yay)
it's pretty much running how it was on windows for me, with occasional lag or stutter here and there, sometimes it's not even an issue on our ends, like the DBD servers be on the fritz when it's like a seasonal event or some new killer/survivor chapter dropped and hella people are playing the game, like I remember this year's anniversary event was so laggy and everyone's ping in the lobby was like 150 m/s
so in conclusion, since DBD is built on spaghetti code, you can't really expect much from this buggy mess of a game, especially if you throw Linux into the equation, but at least it runs and has GNU + Linux support, right? :)
