The game stuttered a lot and the framerate didn't go higher than 40fps on 1080p medium settings.
The game crashed thrice after the initial startup video. I have no idea what caused those crashes, since I have been unable to replicate them.
I spent over 3 hours trying to troubleshoot/fix the performance problems, but I decided to give up and play the game on WIndows instead.
Singleplayer works fine, multiplayer is broken due to anti-cheat
As of update 1.69, GTA Online now has BattlEye integrated into it. This means Linux players are unable to join online sessions. Rockstar could fix this issue but they have currently decided not to do so.
If you are planning to play GTA Online on your Linux PC (or Steam Deck), I would suggest you wait until this issue is potentially fixed (if ever).

Game keeps crashing after about 15 minutes of playing. Allowing the game to see the Nvidia GPU causes the game to crash on shader compilation at startup.
I'm running the game on KDE Plasma 6.0 (with explicit sync patches) with HDR enabled on my display without any significant problems. I'm also running the CachyOS kernel for better performance (atleast on my machine).
With Proton 9.0-2 and Proton Experimental, the game kept crashing (or freezing) about 15-30 seconds after the game window opened. Switching to GE-Proton fixed that issue.
I tested the game on KDE Plasma 6.1.2 (on Wayland).
eval $( echo "gamemoderun mangohud %command%" | sed "s/2KLauncher\/LauncherPatcher.exe'.*/Base\/Binaries\/Win64Steam\/CivilizationVI.exe'/" )
Lots of dropped frames, major stuttering. Frametimes were between 2ms and 300ms.
I kept getting desynced after playing for a couple hours. Restarting the game fixed the desyncs for another few hours.
The native Linux version is incompatible with the Windows version in terms of multiplayer. If you want to play multiplayer with Windows users, you either have to play it under Proton or play it under Windows.
I did try running the game without the launch options specified, but the 2K launcher would block the game from starting properly.
Game process keeps restarting itself in a loop on startup
Anti-cheat causes the game to not start, hopefully Ubisoft would come to their senses and enable BattleEye to work with Proton.
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 gamemoderun %command%
I periodically encountered some slight stuttering whilst playing.
