XBox 360 controller recognized, however A & B controller buttons could not be used until I set game Properties -> "Steam Input Per-Game Setting" to "Forced Off". Also in my situation I set launch options to be "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%".
Fails to Start. Black Screen.
For those with Intel GPUs and claiming no issues....congrats!
I thought I would give it a try. Unfortunately the game would not get past a black screen as others have similarly reported.
I also used "protontricks 275850 win7" as well.
I tried Proton 4.x, 5,x, recent official 6.3-7, Proton Experimental, and Proton-6.20-GE-1 cleaning prefixes between versions. Nothing worked for my situation!
There were no errors or messages in the proton log to give indication that it was even trying to load.
I read that older versions of NMS used DirectX and probably would have worked for me since I do not have issues with other DirectX-based games. I guess with the latest version there's a specific Vulkan feature or version that my iGPU is not capable of handling.
Perhaps when I have a better system and NMS is on sale, I will try again.

I have NOT tried using "Disable Steam Input" with my XBox 360 Wireless controller
Given my very low HW specs and prior reported issue, I had very low expectations that the game would run as well as it did!
Because other users with Intel and Mesa reported having good experiences, I decided to try NMS again and provide an updated report with my hardware.
Since the last time I played, a combination of updated Proton and/or game updates has let me achieve a level of playability now rather than just a blank screen!
Near perfect experience!
Had to use "Properties -> Controller" then "Override" to Disable Steam Input
for my XBox 360 Wireless.
Not a big deal but neither DXVK or Mango HUD worked for me.
XBox 360 controller recognized however controller's buttons could not be used until I set "Steam Input Per-Game Setting = Forced Off". No Proton tweaks required!
Proton 6.10-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
As others report in Steam reviews, it starts out windowed. I just double-clicked the title bar and it went full screen. Initially it was not clear how to exit and was able to alt-tab then use "xkill" to select and kill the window. Later I found out how to gracefully return to the menu and exit the game.
My XBOX 360 wireless controller was not recognized by default. As with some other games played with Proton, I had to select "Disable Steam Input" on the Steam configuration controller settings before it was detected in game.
Given my system specs I was surprised how reasonable the 1st level played . I'm running a somewhat low-end system and 1080p resolution.
I tried using "PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 DXVK_HUD=1" but nothing shows up to benchmark.
I haven't played long enough to determine if graphics will break down further during more complex scenes or boss fights yet.
