Works OOTB
Occasional crackling, only seems to happen when certain other applications are streaming audio
Unhandled Exception at launch (or silent crash)
Tried installing Plutonium through Lutris, but it failed to install.
Initially would hang on "Updating executable" then silently crash and exit. Running it once with Proton 5.13 allowed it to run first time setup. However, the only noticable change is that it now displays the error "Unhandled exception caught" when it crashes.
I haven't tried multiplayer, but I had minimal issues with the campaign.
Two crashes during a playthrough of the campaign, message: "Unhandled exception caught"
Excellent performance on Steam Deck
May need to install Proton EasyAntiCheat Runtime, if it doesn't install automatically
Even with FPS counts over 400, all included titles are less smooth than on Windows. Exclusive fullscreen improves this, but doesn't eliminate it.
Functions as expected for MCC multiplayer
Occasionally, the anti-cheat will go off, but closing and relaunching the game fixes it. I have yet to try any mods.
Intermittent missing textures in menu and replays, doesn't seem to affect gameplay
Seems to require GE Proton
On Linux, MODIFIER_KEY is mapped to RightShift by default. This can be changed in the settings.cfg in the Kerbal Space Program folder.
I used to have issues with the native build (massive lag when moving the mouse with a polling rate over 125 Hz), but these seem to be fixed now. I've recently played the game natively on Linux, and with Proton, and I haven't found any differences.
I highly recommend CKAN for mods, I'm pushing this game from 2011 pretty far, and it's keeping up really well.
Installing mods for the 2.0 build is much more feasible on Linux, as there is less reliance on Project Sicario Merger (and thus Vortex). However, whenever new textures (eg. plane skins) were added, the frame rate would drop to sub-15 FPS unless all the settings were turned down. I'm assuming this is compiling Vulkan shaders for the mod content, since it does evenually even out, and it performs as expected going forward. Launching the game does take noticably longer when a significant amount of mods need to be loaded.
Slightly lower performance than on Windows, but everything works as expected.
More slowdown when large amounts of physics objects are present compared to running on Windows.
