Not perfect, but it isn't on Windows either. You're basically trading some annoying UI bugs for better stability and performance. It's fine.
PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 WINED3D=1 %command%
- Game runs by default in a borderless window with a fully visible taskbar which sits on top of it. Haven't been able to get it to fullscreen properly, but this is tolerable.
- Sometimes UI windows and dialogue boxes get stuck behind the game window. Alt+TAB doesn't work since the window manager (GNOME, at least) sees all OMSI windows as belonging to the same program. I use ALT+Drag to move the borderless game window and reveal any menus stuck underneath. Fortunately this doesn't happen often.
When installing mods on Linux, the asset folders in the OMSI directory are CASE SENSITIVE. If new vehicles aren't showing up in the menu, or modded maps are loading to a blank void, check you don't have any duplicate asset folders with differently cased letters. For example: "Sceneryobjects" is the correct directory for map objects, but a mod might install a second folder e.g. "SceneryObjects", which the game will not look in. In such instances, you'll need to merge that folder's contents with the correctly cased folder. This isn't a problem on Windows, since the NTFS filesystem doesn't normally treat directories as case sensitive.
I've tried running Map Tools, which is a community debugging tool for OMSI which loads up a map, detects missing assets and helps you figure out why it's not loading properly. Both with and without protontricks, the program hangs and won't work.
I've found the game runs smoother, and with far fewer crashes than on Windows - thus far, no crashes at all, likely thanks to DXVK. Still no change to the huge lagspikes when loading new parts of the map, but that's an issue with the game itself.
If you have an AMD Navi GPU, don't buy this game for Linux.
after 10-15 mins game freezes for 10 seconds; amdgpu driver resets, system resumes with game still frozen and graphical corruption all over the screen not affecting cursor. Game window is impossible to escape after crash, forcing a hard reset. No issues with same hardware on Windows.
Feels smoother than Windows. Rock solid, no crashes. Workshop and cloud saves work great. Seems perfect to me.
Larger workshop maps like Russian Town now load without crashing after upgrading to Proton GE 7.9.
