So after trying just about every available version of Proton, I was only ever able to get it to run using "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%". Unfortunately it only ever topped out at around 20fps at the menu on the lowest settings. Tried windowed, borderless, fullscreen--made no difference. Even attempted rolling back mesa to an older version based on other users with similar specs that were able to get it running, again to no avail.
The game itself was unplayable for me as I am not a medieval slideshow enthusiast, and there were bizarre/creepy artifacts and other glitches from the jump. Pretty disappointed, spent the better part of a week fiddling with this game trying to get it to run for at least an hour a night. I hate to give up but at this point it feels like I'm slamming my head into a wall. Very frustrating as it seems others with similar hardware are running it just fine, I'm not sure why I can't get similar results.
Borked
Would not start, despite attempts with custom Proton builds mentioned in some of the other reports. Hopefully it'll stabilize enough after a few patches to be playable via Steam Play. Not gonna go through the trouble to dual boot for one game. Refunding in the meantime.
*Sengoku.exe -> Sengoku-old.exe *SengokuGame.exe -> Sengoku.exe *5.0-7: Borked *4.11-13: Ran Great
Satisfying results, even on older hardware
Setup & Performance:
- Would not run using latest Proton (v5.0-7)
- 4.2-9 worked like a charm (so long as I selected DirectX 9)
- Performance was highly adequate on budget hardware from 2014
- Slightly worse performance in outdoor areas, but that's to be expected
- Tweaking settings like grass draw distance made a noticeable difference
Review:
- Played for about 3 hours, happy overall, plan on continuing
- Feels like a B-movie version of The Witcher, which I find charming
- Does some interesting things to set itself apart, particularly with regards to the magic system, and offers skill trees for multiple play styles
- Hilariously bad/"videogamey" (in a good way) voice acting, sound effects
- Highly recommended for relatively simple, cheesy fun
Comments & Recommendations:
- You may have to disable the "HD Videos" setting in order to see cutscenes (I did not test with it enabled)
- Turn the bloom effect WAY down or disable it completely unless you want everything in the game to be shiny as hell
- The game seems to add a blur effect on the horizon and in backgrounds during dialogue scenes; I think this is by design and wasn't able to find a way to change it in the settings, however it didn't bother me too much
Please Note: ProtonDB displays my GPU as "AMD HAWAII", but more specifically it is a Radeon R9 290.
