Steam automatically installed Proton EasyAntiCheat Runtime for me and I didn't have to do anything there.
Decided to use Proton 8 from reports here and to insulate myself against any future Proton changes which may degrade things (unlikely as that is). Native linux version is terrible for some reason. It is wonderful playing on Proton 8 though! I guess Windows is now a graphics API target?
Used protontricks as follows:
- Downloaded flatpak available from Flathub link at protontricks repo: https://github.com/Matoking/protontricks
- Installed protontricks flatpak
- Ran "protontricks --gui 1284410"
- Followed GUI, set up a wineprefix
- Used "Install a Windows DLL or component" option
- Chose "mfc140" from list
With mfc140 installed, game works!
Minor problem with fullscreen, can't access taskbar
Can't challenge friends on GOG friend list to friendly games on Linux
Can't challenge GOG friends to friendly matches. Otherwise works flawlessly.
Aside from not being able to play friendly games against GOG friends, game works flawlessly
%command% -intro:off -CustomResolution:enabled -r2560x1440x32
Initially used a few custom launch args I found here, I removed some to see what would happen and.. still rock solid. Yay. I don't want windowed mode so I just kept the 1440p resolution and intro disabling args. Note: I'm using a non-standard (newer) kernel for this version of Mint for improved support of my very recent (at time of writing) hardware.
Super smooth, 99% native. The year of the Linux Gaming Desktop is here.
Inconsistent loudness - seems to be fault of the game itself. Under Windows I can use "Loudness Equalization", no equivalent on my setup AFAIK.
Installed XPadNeo to be able to use my SCUF Xbox One controller with bluetooth
I spent a few hours comparing my Windows and Linux Mint setups. My conclusion is that the game performs better on Linux

Cinematics do not work
Highly inconsistent use of my hardware. Most of the time CPU cores are at 80% usage while my 1080Ti GPU sits at 30-40%. Very bad FPS considering hardware.
Performance is extremely variable
Unfortunately I can't get this to run in a stable manner. I am not going to bother setting CPU core affinity because from what I've seen even though one core is maxed out, the rest are not far behind at 70-80% anyway. Also, I don't have time because I am busy. I'm not going to play it on Windows because Billy G can suck a fat one, so I'm going to request a refund.
