When it works, it works well.
Game will sometimes not let you get to the main menu. It will just hang on the loading screen.
I found that when I can't get to the main menu to start the game, I have to go and tell steam to verify the installation. After that the game will usually work just fine. Sometimes switching proton versions and a verify will work as well. At worst telling the game to reinstall seems to fix things for a bit.
Game works really well with a supported version of proton and by turning off v-sync with a dxvk.conf file.

Turning off v-sync with dxvk massively improved performance. https://steamcommunity.com/app/410320/discussions/0/1747898397219502826/ explains the process.
Short version. Go to base game directory, create a text file called dxvk.conf
. Add this line to the file dxgi.syncInterval = 0
. Save the file. You're now good to go, no need for launch flags.
It seems like certain combinations of proton versions and likely Nvidia cards leads to crashes when there's too much going on. I got crashes with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1
on Proton 6.3-2.
5.13-6 works with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1
, but has bad (but consistent) frame rates.
Found out the quick menu now works properly as well!
Quick note for people new to playing this game with Proton. I've found that when the game boots I get a black screen until I click the mouse or press a keyboard button. After that it loads the normal splash screens.
Working out of the box on Proton 9.2
Everything seems to work just fine. I also tried on experimental and that also worked.
Long equipment names are hard to read
I had already signed into epic on my computer, so I don't know if the signin process on the deck works.
Works well on steamdeck.
Long equipment names are hard to read. There's some other hard to read text. But the subtitles are readable.
If you turn on halfrate shading, most text is unreadable.
At 60FPS there's some frame drops to around 50FPS
Game runs well enough on the steamdeck. Occasional frame drops, but otherwise very playable.
I had already signed into epic for online play on my computer, so I can't verify if the onetime need to sign into epic for online play works well on the steamdeck.
Desync can happen in multiplayer, but the problem seems to happen regardless of OS.
