Works perfectly after applying the mf-install tweak : https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install -- black screen otherwise. Seems to apply to all recent Microids games. (French company)

Runs perfectly with the nvidia 396.54.09 drivers. I had tried before with the 415.x and it didn't start (but I didn't try any of the Proton/Wine environment variables).
I have the slight feeling sync is not absolutely perfect (compared to using retroarch) and that there is a very slight input lag but it's absolutely possible it is the way the remake is done -- I would have to compare with an actual Windows PC. Perfectly playable.
It now works perfectly out of the box, with proper sync & controller support. It didn't with the previous Proton beta !
