Either doesn't launch, or freezes before the menu.
Used Proton Experimental and Proton 5.0-10 as others suggested. Neither worked. Trying Proton-GE got me a bit farther and made the videos work, but froze on a white screen before the menu.
Missing FMVs and occasional stuttering issues don't prevent the game from being playable, but your mileage may vary.
In-game movies appear as blank white, can be distracting as these "FMVs" appear on certain objects in the game, i.e. screens.
Occasional stutter.
Proton version 5.13-6 was a must in order to get into the game properly. Other versions led to freezing or wouldn't launch the game at all.
6.14-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Intermittent stuttering in some areas that aren't present on Windows (i.e. populated areas such as Ul'Dah)
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d8=n,b" %command%
Horrible color banding in dark areas on the map, and dark bits like Max's coat. Fixed with WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d8=n,b" %command% in the launch options. Others suggested applying Widescreen fix by ThirteenAG. Using the WINEDLLOVERRIDES launch option fixes the color banding issue regardless of whether or not you're using that mod.
Pre-rendered opening cutscene does not work. Other cutscenes do.
Stuttery mess, but someone who is both attached to Linux and hopelessly addicted to PSO2 can suffer through it.
Graphical artifacts appear shortly after an in-game concert concludes in the Retem City area.
Stuttering when loading assets
Game will fail to load unless you set the terrain view distance setting to its lowest preset.
The game stutters very frequently, particularly when loading new assets. Sometimes for a few seconds at a time. Much more apparent in the New Genesis portion of the game, but apparent in the base game, as well. It's doubtful that it has anything to do with shader compilation, as the game will always stutter when loading areas and assets, even ones that have been previously loaded.
I played several hours of this game under Linux with both an NVME SSD install, before moving it to my 4 TB SSHD hybrid drive. Apart from the SSD sporting somewhat faster load times when launching the game, I haven't found the stuttering issue to be any more or less frequent with either storage.
