Games runs pretty much identical to windows but there is a constant microsuttering that just won't go away and makes the game unenjoyable.
Constant microstuttering that will not go away no matter how much I play (Proton 7.0)
In-game benchmark says I have an average of 47.5 fps and that's what it looks like on the actual game but the constant microsttutering every literal second makes the game playable but unenjoyable. Proton version: 7.0 - I own the game on Epic but not on Steam, launching it through Heroic Games Launcher with Proton 7.0
Game runs great, but has occasional crashes
I'm almost at the end of the game and I have experienced 2 random crashes, both of them occurred during fighting if that's any help. Save frequently and it shouldn't be too much of an issue, everything else regarding the game seems to be working correctly and with good performance.
Can confirm that the "constant crashing" issue with either Proton 7.0 or versions of GE-Proton prior to 7-43 are solved. No crashes at all
eval $( echo "%command% -ReadTexturePoolFromIni" | sed "s/2KLauncher\/LauncherPatcher.exe'.*/Binaries\/Win32\/BioShockInfinite.exe'/" )
Fix for: poor texture streaming / poor quality textures etc. Go to: /steam/steamapps/compatdata/8870/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/My Games/BioShock Infinite/XGame/Config/
Open the file called "XEngine.ini"
Search for "poolsize" adjust value according to this rule poolsize=Z where Z=600xVRAM in GB so if your GPU has 3 GB VRAM then poolsize=1800 (600 x 3 GB)
In the same file change the following settings also: UseTextureFileCache=False BoostPlayerTextures=3.0 TexturePoolSizeReductionMB=1500 LowPCTexturePoolSizeMB=3000
USE GE-PROTON7-43, ANY OTHER PREVIOUS VERSION HAS CONSTANT CRASHES, also, without that specific launch option the game won't launch, use that launch option to bypass the 2K launcher
Game is playable with less than ideal performance, use "Proton Hotfix" as other versions either have constant crashes or graphical glitches
Using any version of Proton except "Proton Hotfix" will results in glitchy images on the save screen, as well as the area around stores becoming pitch black, among other minor graphical glitches
changing any graphical setting including "windowed / fullscreen" will result in a massive loss of performance until you restart the game
Given other reports and from reading about experiences of windows users I should be able to get a lot better performance with my 2060 RTX, I have to set everything to "low" and use AMD FSR "quality", with these settings I get around ~40 fps most of the time, but in areas with a lot of different light sources performance drops to less than 30 fps
Using any version of Proton other than "Proton Hotfix" will result in constant crashes (the game freezes for around 10 seconds and then you get a window saying "Directx Error")
If you don't care about lowering your settings and poor performance given your hardware, you can very much play the game from start to finnish. Otherwise, wait until either the devs fix this or a better version of Proton comes out.
Used the steps to get the game working on Bottles and Lutris, Tried Proton Exp, GE 9-20 Steam says the game is running but nothing happens
Installed WebView2 with compatibility set to Windows 7, changed renderer to GDI
Tried the same steps I followed to get the game working on Lutris and Bottles (WebView2, GDI renderer etc) but the game doesn't launch, Steam says the game is running but nothing happens, tried with both Proton Experimental and GE-Proton 9-25 and GE-Proton 9-20 but got the same result
Previous Report was made on Linux Mint 22.1, switched to Nobara 41 and now I can play the game normally for some reason
Installed Microsoft EdgeWebView2 (compatibility Windows 7), changed renderer to "GDI"
Every time you change menus (example, being on the main screen and clicking "Campaign" or opening the event window in the upper left corner, the freezes for half a second), this weird issue also happens when clearing a stage, the character freezes for half a second before playing the victory animation. This also happens in both Lutris and Bottles and on different distros, so it's definitely a game issue. For me, this issue started after a game update between the Daiyan and Dushevnaya banners, before that the game worked normally
My first report on this game was made about three weeks before this one, I was using Linux Mint 22.1 at the time and in that report I said I followed the usual steps needed to play the game on Lutris and Bottles, but no matter what I did I couldn't get the game to even launch for the first time, and also it got stuck and it wouldn't close either so I had to kill the process manually every time. I made one last attempt to reinstall and play the game on Steam while on Linux Mint yesterday (March 1st 2025) but I got the same result as before (wouldn't launch and the process would need to be killed manually on the system monitor) After this, I installed Nobara 41 (Nvidia ISO) which unlike Linux Mint uses wayland as default instead of X11 and uses much newer drivers for Nvidia, it also seems that the Steam version of Nobara came with another Proton version I've never seen before "UMU-Proton-9.0-3.2" so I tried installing the game using that Proton version (and applying the usual protontricks changes required for Lutris and Bottles: installing EdgeWebView2 and setting it to compatibility with Windows 7, then changing the renderer to "GDI") AND THIS TIME IT LAUNCHED! first try, downloaded the game normally, restarted the game and it launched again without issues, logged in using the same trick required for Lutris and Bottles and finally managed to play the Steam version, I exited the game, tried launching it again and it launched again without issues, then I tried closing Steam then reopenning it and launching the game again, no issues, played the game normally.
I honestly don't know what did the trick compared to before, if it was just using Nobara instead of Linux Mint, if it was using wayland instead of X11, or if it was using "UMU-Proton-9.0-3.2" instead of other versions, maybe it was a combination of those three but again, I have no idea.
If you need a step by step guide of the Protontricks/Winetricks you need to do in order to get the game working, here's a link: https://www.reddit.com/r/GirlsFrontline2/comments/1h8k56u/howto_fix_haoplay_version_crashing_for_linux_and/
The current latest Nvidia driver for my distro is 535.171.04 and the game does warn you about the recommended driver being 550
Most textures are missing on characters and environments, the game runs but it's not playable in this state.
The Nvidia driver might be culprit here but I'm not 100% sure.
If you don't care about Anti-Aliasing and can stand playing with jaggies, the game works perfectly (Proton 7.0)
Changed the resolution to 1080p (not supported out of the box) ".../Prey 2006/base/preyconfig.cfg" seta r_customHeight "1080" seta r_customWidth "1920" seta r_mode "-1"
If you enable the in-game AA (either 2x or 4x) anything meant to be transparent (aka water or glass) become pitch black, otherwise the rest of the graphics look fine.
Without tinkering the "preyconfig.cfg" you'll still be able to play but there's no option for 1080p or higher, max resolution out of the box is 1900 x 1200
Game doesn't work out of the box, requires (Media Foundation) in order to work, even then videos still don't play.
WINEPREFIX="/home/[insert your username here]/.steam/debian-installation/steamapps/compatdata/1952250/pfx" PROTON="/home/[insert your username here]/.steam/debian-installation/compatibilitytools.d/GE-Proton7-42" ./mf-install.sh -proton
Videos don't play at all and all you get is a black screen (example: the intro video after the first level). Just press ESC and then select skip to advance.
