Works great with no tweaks
When I enabled fractional resolution scaling (150%) I did have an issue with the game display not sizing properly to the monitor. However, using 200% scaling or 100% works properly so it seems to just be an issue with the fractional scaling.
Mouse scrollwheel does not function properly on battle map. It only zooms all the way in or out, but not in-between.
There was significant artifacting on the campaign map before switching to proton 7-0-6. The scroll wheel on my mouse zooms the campaign map properly, but on the battle map it will only zoom all the way out or all the way in (not in-between). To compensate I mapped the q and e keys to zoom out and in for the battle map (I'm using w-a-s-d for arrow keys).
Runs smoothly on max settings at 1440P. High settings work well for 4K.
Will not launch from Steam Big Picture mode, presumably because of a conflict with the EA Games launcher.
I had issues with crashing to desktop after battles with proton 8-0-5, but switching to proton 7-0-6 seems to fix that.
Edit preferences.script.txt so that max VRAM is detected (seems to max out at 4 GB)
Note that this game has well known optimization issues unrelated to proton or Linux so you'll probably want to tinker with the graphics settings to get it to run smoothly, even with modern hardware. Turning down shadows, reflections, and anti-aliasing seems to help a lot.

Installed vcrun2005 via protontricks
Occassional distracting audio distortion noise on campaign map. Can usually be atleast temporarily resolved by changing audio settings or going to a different part of the campaign map. Seems to go away over time. Somewhat annoying, but not a deal breaker for me.
Occassionally crashes, usually in large battles. It only happens in land battles (naval battles and the campaign map were not effected). I couldn't figure out a resolution to this. Tried proton experimental + protontricks vcrun2005 as well as proton versions 9.0.3, 8.0.5, 7.0.6, and 6.3.8
There are reports of this game crashing on Windows as well so I'm not sure if proton is actually the fundamental issue.
Installed the following components with protontricks:
d3dcompiler_43 d3dcompiler_47 d3dx11_42 d3dx11_43
Select Directx 11 in the in-game video options if it isn't already selected. Tweaks were based on other reviews here and the following guide: https://steamcommunity.com/app/34330/discussions/0/3712685279008395434/
