It runs extremely well and smoothly.
There is crackling and distortion with very loud audio moments while diving onto the planet, but it is otherwise fine.
I run in Borderless Full Screen Window mode and when the opening cinematic starts it does not always launch and occupy the full screen. I have found the most reliable way to switch over to it is to click on the bottom portion of that window when I pops up while I hover over the Steam icon.
As of 1.4, I can run the default Steam recommendation. Prior to that I ran the hotfix version of Proton.
I am not sure this can reasonably be attributed to Proton. 4 Player Brawl mode is quite CPU intensive - the dev's even have a warning about it when you go to select that specific mode.
Prior to patch 1.4 it ran just fine, but afterwards I am experiencing significant slow downs.

While running the game, even in my relatively empty hideout, I would notice a wierd "micro-pause" that would occur every few seconds. I found it sufficiently annoying that I was not playing because of it.
Nothing anomalous in the in game FPS/latency charts seemed to correspond.
Someone else posted something similar indicating that using WIFI under Linux could cause this "micro-pause" / "brief rubber band".
I switched to a wired internet connection and it solved the issue The game is now perfectly smooth.
Seems to be high CPU use or latency issue re: Wifi in Linux?
If you are running into any wierd issues and you are connecting over Wifi - try a wired connection. I was shocked, but it worked for me.
It seems to run a bit slower than Windows but it is absolutely playable.
Flavour text during loading screens is a bit garbled.
The game does seem to slow down a bit over time. However, a month or so ago it would not start at all - it is a bit slow but playable now without any adjustment to settings.
