horrible performance (max 60fps, but can drop to 6fps, usually at 30fps) even with all settings at low/off
after some small tweaks the game runs just fine, performance isn't great but it's playable
the tweaks in short: first Find FFXIV_Boot.cfg and open in your favorite text editor, set BrowserType=2. Launch once, exit immediately. Find FFXIV.cfg again, and set CutsceneMovieOpening=1
to get audio working I used this command (you need wineprefix installed): WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/39210/pfx" winetricks xact d3d11=native dxgi=native xaudio2_{0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9}=native

runs really smoothly (~60 fps), and with no crashes. Only minor problem is that exiting the game doesn't always work and you need to manually kill the process.
some cutscenes have missing audio (there is some cracling at times), works fine on GE-Proton
until the audio issue has been fixed on "default" proton I would recommend using GE-proton, if you don't mind installing the correct audio codec manually yourself.
everything works out-of-the-box with GE-Proton, and plays really smooth with max settings.
only issue I had with "default proton" was some (in-game) cutscenes lacked audio, otherwise same experience...until that issue has been resolved I recommend using GE-proton version
everything seems to perform great out-of-box, with high (default) graphic settings fps are is fine.
with the "normal/default" proton there is no audio issue with some in-game cutscenes, until it's resolved I recommend using GE-Proton
(the game doesn't seem to like if you change the default resolution, as it seems keep freezing after that, have to check if its happens on desktop as well)
game will work after minor setting up
the startup launcher blank is still relevant (you can see little bit when you try to resize it) try find and press the OK button to proceed....and the the memory issue where you need set: PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1 %command% as a start parameter to fix it
(this was tested with "proton-experimental [bleeding-edge]" and with "Proton-7.0rc3-GE-1")
so the game does (kinda) work, but as the "out of the box" experience is still broken
