As user Wyziqi advised, DX9 dlls are required to run the game: >protontricks 372480 d3dx9_31 (repeat for d3dx9_32)
Video playback is borked. Black screen with something playing left hand bar
Game won't run without tinkering. Once it's running though it's smooth as silk and pretty for such an old game.
Installed "d3dx9_31.dll" and "d3dx9_32.dll"
Intro and first cutscene are .mff files and are only diplayed as black screen with a single vertical stripe on the left

After installing "d3dx9_31.dll" and "d3dx9_32.dll" when launching game for the first time game launches into black screen with looping sound, but after closing and opening again it worked fine
Installed "d3dx9_31.dll" and "d3dx9_32.dll" via protontricks GUI.
Lots of small text in dialogues and menus.
Objects are shaking/stuttering, some AI ships are flying weirdly (probably the game logic is affected).
Gamepad buttons not mapped by default.
Around 10 FPS on Steam Deck (can be slightly faster or slower depends on the settings in the Options pre-game launcher menu).
All the intro/ingames movies are invisible (black screen with a single vertical stripe on the left, the sound plays fine).
