The collectors CD edition has a typo in the steam launch command (yes really), so you need to pass %command% # " as a launch option.

The controls are incredbily unresponsive and I couldn't figure them out after 15 min after play-testing. I couldn't get past menu
Would be helpful for someone else to figure out how the controls worked. Maybe it needs to be under a different proton configuration. Controls were so unresponsive and not visible, I stopped bothering.

%command% /softwarecursor
mouse cursor didnt show
Hardware Acceleration is not working.
$ protontricks 355250 winecfg
set: "ddraw"="native,builtin"
Install "xwa_ddraw_d3d11", enjoy 3D + desktop resolution.

Can't get the mouse cursor to show up in Special Edition, can't get the game to launch in the Collectors CD edition.

No mouse cursor on first launch so switched to software cursor by setting launch options to:
gamemoderun %command% /softwarecursor

Disabled steam overlay in library
Games DLC crashes while launching

protontricks 355250 winecfg
Select the library tab and in "New Override for Library" type ddraw, then click add. Confirm the warning.
This is only for the Special edition (remastered win95 version)
By default the game starts and goes into the main menu, but it crashes when entering missions. This is fixable by using a custom ddraw implementation xwa_ddraw from https://github.com/rdoeffinger/xwa_ddraw_d3d11/releases/latest Ensure you copy the nopowervr.txt from the zip file as without this 3d acceleration did NOT work for me.
I've written up instructions on how I got this working at https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2261046709

wincfg add ddraw.ddl native override
This is only for the Special edition (remastered win95 version)
By default the game starts and goes into the main menu, but it crashes when entering missions. This is fixable by using a custom ddraw implementation (dgVoodoo2) as long as 3d acceleration is not set in the game settings.

I got the Collector's CD version of game to work by using DOSBox directly. I also utilized a MIDI synth (fluidsynth) to improve the quality of the music. Full instructions are here (tested on Ubuntu and Debian):

Here are some useful DOSBox key combos:
Alt-Enter: Toggle fullscreen
Ctrl-F10: Release mouse pointer from DOSBox
Alt-Pause: Pause DOSBox emulation
When playing a mission in TIE Fighter:
k: Keyboard reference

Only Classic Edition starts, but not playable. Special and Collectors Edition don't even start.
black screen freeze
choppy
Only Classic Edition starts, Collectors oder Special Edition does not work.

It works out of the box on Proton. I copied dgVoodoo2 files, delete in game folder the existing ddraw.dll so that only the one from dgVoodoo2 was there, set ddraw to native with protontricks GAMEID winecfg and then the game worked with DXVK (DX7 - DX9 - Vulkan translation).

Worked perfectly including xbox 360 gamepad
