Game used to run fine when i first got it around the time of it's initial release, but it seems they updated their anticheat configuration so it no longer runs. i've tried every numbered Proton release available, Experimental, Hotfix, as well as GE 9-22, same deal with all of them.

Proton 3.XX versions fully fail after the EAC window vanishes, no black screen appears and the game does not show as being running in Steam. Proton version 4.11-13, the EAC window appears and dissappears as normal, but the black window persists, and after a while, a prompt window stating "fatal error" appears, and the black window closes when you click "ok" on the prompt, and the game does not appear as running in Steam. Proton version 4.2-9, the EAC window appears and dissappears as normal, but the black screen persists much longer than in newer versions. it disappears, and the game is not shown as running in Steam. Proton versions 5.0-10 - 7.0-6, the usual EAC and black window shenanigans pop up, but i get a WINE C++ runtime error, prompting me to close the application by clicking "OK", or run the WINE debugger by clicking "cancel". the game is shown as running in Steam after i click "OK" to close the application. Proton 8.0-5 to the latest Proton Experimental/Hotfix and GE 9-22, the EAC window appears and disappears as normal, and the black screen appears and disappears on it's own with no error windows, but the game still appears as running in Steam.

technically there is a newer Proton GE out right now (9-23) but i doubt that would fix anything. this is an anticheat issue, one that's also apparently affecting many Windows PCs as well.

the game did not display anything in the headset under any Proton version other than the Steam VR "up next" window that displays anytime you're launching the game, but SteamVR is still waiting for the game to send VR display data.
