For now, just pick a Proton version, install it, and play. And since it's still early access, it could either get better or worse.

Runs great out of the box
Elin runs great without tinkering. I capped my framerate to 30 to improve battery life but this isn't required. The default controller layout is almost perfect and uses the trackpads for interacting in-game and quick switching the hotbar. My only note is that by default, the Deck triggers are swapped from the on-screen mouse cursor which can be disorientating when trying to interact, pick up, craft in-game (e.g., left trigger is mapped to right click, right trigger is mapped to left click). This is something that can be easily swapped in the Steam controller settings.
Plays perfectly fine on Linux
Encountered no issues at all
Game works fine aside from mods, as one vanilla minigame uses a mod loaded by default enabling mods is needed for all game content to work.
Protontricks/Winetricks is needed for mod support, including vanilla "mods" inculded for some features in the base game
"Mod is Disabled" error when trying to use slot machine, despite it being part of the vanilla game and not being able to toggle it off. This is due to use of BepinEx for mod handling, fixable by following instructions here: https://docs.bepinex.dev/articles/advanced/proton_wine.html
The game works as if it is on windows without any issues, you can play it out of the box with no tinkering needed.
No issues, though the game is currently in early access so that may change in the future.
The game ran without any problems for the ~10 hours I've played so far. I ran it with ProtonGE from the start, but there is no aspect of the game that would notably interfere with regular Proton.
The game needs to have buttons mapped.
So far I only opened it to test if the game runs. The right trigger is a mouse. I've been getting by just using the right trigger + interacting with the screen. There are not other recognized inputs that I'm aware of.
The game itself runs perfect out of the box, but it's missing inputs. I will see about creating a controller conf on steam, so keep an eye out for a controller config called Maz at some point
At least in the alpha version of Elin, it runs completely fine natively on Debian. This may change in future updates, but for now it works completely fine.
