Cutscenes work with Proton 9.0.3. Experimental or GE is not needed. Game works well.

Disabled Back Grip Buttons
Set TDP to 7w and hardware lock to 60 fps
The videos don't play right without either forcing experimental or using GE-proton. Though I found that you do have to always change to the newest GE version older versions did not work for me.

Cutscenes can be fixed using CCCP codec pack, see below. Tested on Steam & Lutris with Proton9, GE-Proton9-11, and wine-GE8.26.
Cutscenes in many Ys games use the MPEG-PS codec so this may fix other Ys titles too.
To fix cutscenes tl:dr - install Combined Community Codec Pack and check the boxes for MPEG-PS under 'CCCP SYSTEM SETTINGS'.
STEPS\
- Install 'ProtonTricks' flatpak via Discover Store in Desktop Mode
- Search & Download 'Combined Community Codec Pack' & Save it to Desktop
- Run ProtonTricks from Desktop Mode
- Select your Ys game from the list (Origin or Chronicles+ for example)
- Select "Default Wine Prefix"
- Select "Run Uninstaller" This will bring up a new menu
- From this new menu, Select "Install..." A small file browser will pop up
- Select (.exe) from the 'Files of Type' drop down. It may not show the CCCP installer.exe otherwise
- Find and select the CCCP installer you downloaded to your Desktop
- Install CCCP and at the end select "reset settings" and "configure cccp"
- In the CCCP configure popup, select 'CCCP System Settings'
- Check the box for MPEG-PS and hit OK

Game runs perfectly on the Steam Deck OLED however you will need to use Proton GE to make cutscenes display correctly.
7w TDP limit + 60fps cap
Cutscenes were initially displaying inverted and upside down. Using Proton GE 9-10 allowed these to finally display properly (NOTE: The cutscene will have a whitish pixel look for the first 2 seconds, however it clears up immediately and the rest plays out fine)
Switched to a community controller profile for controls.
Finished one whole story route and ran into no other issues. Great game for the Deck.

to see the cutscenes you have to switch to proton GE (in official proton you only hear the audio without video)
swap buttons in ys origin config tool or change the steam input to keystrokes (for example A button > "z" key)
using the official Proton in the cutscenes the audio works but but without playing the respective video (displays a multi-colored striped screen like those on TVs). But after switching to the last Proton GE (version 9-5 at the time of writing this) the cutscenes play as normal.
The rest of the game works fine with both normal proton and GE.
I also enabled turbo (steam input) for the attack button (no more button smashing)

installed cinepak and directshow
It didn't launch the cinematics with Proton, and didn't run at all on Proton-GE. Once cinepak and directshow were installed through Protontricks, it woked perfectly with Proton-GE. I haven't tested it with Proton, but it should be fine too.

Crashes after the first cutscene (Steam exclusive)
No cutscenes, game doesn't play on Steam but will play off of it
There may be a way to go about getting it to work on Steam, but for me, at least for now, I have to play through the game files through the games install folder.
If you're like me and the game launches perfectly fine, you can configure the game, but you can't get past the initial cutscenes without crashing, you might just want to go into the game files folder and launch it that way (or through Lutris/Wine/Bottles). The game plays perfectly fine, great even, with kb+m or a gamepad, just doesn't play nicely with Steam.
The game won't recognize as being played through Steam this way, meaning if achievements are a big thing for you, you can resort to SAM or finding a workaround/fix. The game saves will not be the same (Steam - locally run) so I haven't tried copying over a save file from past the initial start, but it might work that way.

I also switched the resolution to 1280x800 in Steam settings and adjusted in-game graphics settings to high-definition. Plays perfectly. I played only a little bit but I would assume the rest of the game works flawlessly too.
Worked nicely out of the box
Cutscenes were sound-only with a black screen. I used the separate configuration tool to turn off all movie playback. As far as I can tell, I didn't miss anything about the story from this.
I played with a controller.
At times not registering the c key press and hold/release
Unlocked arena stages not saving, but remaining arena SP does. When re-unlocking previously unlocked stages, time records will reappear.
Sometimes keys don't register
Usually saves, but once experienced the save state to regressed several stages when relaunching game
Intro video doesn't play using default Proton at the moment, but switch to GE-33 and this is a perfect Deck game.
No problems running the game. Cutscreens are fine.
Game did not start up

Bound start (options) to escape, to enable opening the menus
The cutscenes don't play using the official Proton (audio works but has a blank screen). But after switching to Proton GE 7-33, everything seems to work fine, and the cutscenes play as normal.
Game runs perfectly with open cinematics, gameplay and cutscenes on Steam Deck with latest ProtonGE
Just had to swap buttons in ys origin launcher config tool
Simply download the latest version of GE Proton by installing Protonup in the Discovery store and adding the latest version to the steam game's properties.
Without any tinkering you cannot see the cutscenes, which can be very frustrating, as some of them are always french (I don't speak french) and they cannot be skipped (The first one is quite long).
I also enabled one of the backpedals to be "jump" as this allows for casting magic while jumping without holding the Deck weird.
Woks out of the Box with GE-Proton7-24. Opening Cinematics and Videos Play.
A bit too much tinkering to get it work appropriately. But once it's done, the game plays like anywhere else.
As others said, needed for FMVs to work:
- cinepak
- directshow
Contrary to others here, I was not able to have my DS4 detected in-game no matter how I positionned Steam Input.
I had to:
- Enable Steam Input
- Use a controller -> keyboard mapping profile
- I have to physically re-connect the controller each time I get in-game
- I used a Mesa Git version that crashed consistently in certain sections of the game, DXVK or not, so beware.
Once you're done applying the many fixes it's quite enjoyable and works with gamescope but it certainly doesn't work Out of the box.
Plus if you experience crashes, look at your Mesa version (works with 22.0.4 for me).
To fix videos on the Steam Deck, do the following:
- Install Ys Origin, then under
Properties > Compatibility
, force Proton version 4.2-9 - Boot up the game at least once, and confirm that the intro video was skipped. The game will load straight to the
new game, continue, etc
menu. - Install the Protontricks flatpak from the Discover store. flathub link
- Run Protontricks, and select
Ys Origin
. You'll see a bunch of warnings that you can ignore, just keep clickingok
until you get awinetricks
window - Once you reach the
winetricks
window, do the following:
- select default wine prefix
- install a Windows DLL or component
- select
cinepak
anddirectshow
, and clickok
- You'll see more warnings/errors for the cinepak and directshow install, you can ignore those and click
OK
.
The install process will be finished when you see the winetricks
window again.
Videos broken, can be fixed with Protontricks
Any previous tips (cinepak, directshow, LAVFilters) do not work in any way. No FMV cutscenes play. I even tried xvid since the Lutris GOG install script uses it, but nothing changed.
I think the issues significantly impact the game since it's a story driven game with missing cutscenes.
Install directshow and cinepack for videos to work with the command: protontricks 207350 directshow cinepack
For controller to be detected you need to disable steam input. Also the controller drifts unless you use proton 4.2.9. Tested with PS5 controller via USB.
On many proton versions after installing cinepack + directshow the game closed after the intro videos. Without cinepack + directshow the game works just fine, just you will not see any video.

Alt-Tab doesn't work
As of 5.0-9, all you need to make every video(logo, opening and cutscenes) play is to install lavfilters into the game's prefix.
Had to switch Proton to 4.2-9 for my dualshock 4 to work properly, once I made it in game I had no performance issues
For all versions of Proton other than 4.2-9 the Y axis would drift upwards as long as my Dualshock 4 was connected and it would have been unplayable if I didn't experiment until I found it
Works out of the box
Intro movie doesn't play, but the game itself is fully playable
Controller is fixed on moving up. Game does not start after pressing new game

Cutscene videos didn't play out of the box. Fixed by installing cinepak and directshow via winetricks.

Cutscene video does not play.

Like other YS titles, the opening video didn't play. I am using a Dualshock 4 (connected via Bluetooth) and it mostly works but occasionaly the games decides it can't work in menus. Alt-F4ing also sometimes causes the game to close.

Works absolutely smoothly with controller out of the box.

Cutscene video does not play. Otherwise great.

Works flawlessly with Xbox 360 Controller

Only thing wrong is that it doesn't show cutscenes. Should be Gold not platinum. Platinum is for games that work perfectly out of the box.

Some screen tearing exists. Sadly no vsync option is available ingame. Had to bind keyboard bindings to the steam controller to get it to work. Aside from these things, runs perfectly.

Game works perfectly except cutscenes don't show.
