Had to rename "ThiefSimulatorVR_Data" to "thiefSimulatorVR_Data", lowercase the first letter. Otherwise the game does not recognize controllers and does not show hand models.
Game has improved a lot after the performance+ update. Runs almost always at 90 fps after a few graphical tweaks.
Needed to use the "singlepass" beta branch of the game, as the regular version renders shadows only on one eye.

on release this was unplayable on linux, but the game got a major performance patch rewrite with a new engine and tons of fixes on may 5th 2020 (before test in beta branch) and it works great now! no tweaks required, it works ootb.
Really choppy experience. If you don't mind playing with ~40 fps and you want to RP as a thief, then this game is for you.
Had to change the folder name from "ThiefSimulatorVR_Data" to "thiefSimulatorVR_Data" (yes, to a lower case "t"), otherwise it didn't detect my controllers.
The game already suffers from horrible performance on windows, which makes proton run even worse.
Launching SteamVR before Steam will cause the vr dashboard to not load properly, causing the game to crash on boot. The game might crash if shadows are not disabled.
Only a quick white screen appears before crashing.
I tried with different versions of proton, even a custom one, but none of them worked.
