I first tried using linux native. I had to change the launch options to "%proton% -force-gfx-direct" to get it to get into a game - otherwise it hard crashed.
Unfortunately, the native linux version just... doesn't render some objects, like tomatoes. Completely missing.
I switched to Proton, and initially had horrible performance as per other users' comments. However, there's a fix - remove the -force-gfx-direct option! That option is not needed for using the Proton version of the game, and once I removed it, the Proton version's performance came back to what I had running linux native.
Now the game runs very smoothly! Just make sure you've forced Proton (choose the proton version in preferences to force it), and you've removed the -force-gfx-direct option if you used it.
Everything just works on steamdeck! Game scales nicely to steamdeck screen too.
