When running with the default lutris-5.6.2-x86_64 the game was not smooth. Sort of a light, consistent stutter, but the controller worked. Using Proton 5.0 is was smooth as far as I could tell but controller did not work. :(
Lutris version of WINE (default was 5.6.2 at the time) kicks the display scaling back to 100% and refresh rate back to 30Hz when it starts the game. The 30Hz refresh rate is what was causing the perceived "suttter" for me which is why it felt odd and hard to explain. Alt+Tab to the desktop, bump the refresh rate back to 60Hz and good to go! Maybe there is a launch option to prevent this issue?
As long as you select the right Linux / Proton options it's fine.
Not native to Linux thus the Install button will be greyed out by default. Under game properties > Force ... specific Steam Play compatibility tool > Proton x.x. Version 5.0-7 worked perfectly for me. Choosing Steam Linux Runtime caused an empty game directory for me. Even re-download attempts created an empty directory. Only Proton would work for me.
Black screen when trying to start the race the first time I played. Steam Shutdown dialog came up for the game and had to force quite.

Resolution starts very low and apparently has to be adjusted via a separate config tool. Not a Proton issue just something to note.
