Running the game in a non-HiDPI resolution and using low graphics settings makes the game feel smooth enough to play.
Small amount of crackling, doesn't affect gameplay
Mouse input was felt slow when using my monitors full HiDPI resolution (2880x1800). Changing the game resolution to 1400x900 resolved this.
I got around 20-40 fps when running at 2880x1800 resolution with graphics set to 'high'. This became 40-60 fps when running at 1400x900 with graphics set to 'low'.

When running at full HiDPI resolution (2880x1800), the mouse felt slow. Changing my resolution to 1400x900 resolved this.
I couldn't find a way to manually set the game resolution.
Setting my system to 2880x1800 resolution resulted in around 30 fps.
Dropping my system resolution to 1440x900 gave me a pretty stable 60 fps, and resolved the mouse slowness.
On a subsequent load, I reverted my system resolution back to 2880x1800, but the game appeared to stay at 1440x900. The only way to reset the resolution was to delete the ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/<APPID>
folder.

Stuck on loading screen
I'm pretty sure I'm experiencing this issue. The game game gets stuck on the initial loading screen, and never progresses beyond that. I'm not sure if it's something to do with my very weak Intel graphics card.
