Report data now available under ODbL

November 1, 2018

In creating ProtonDB, it's been very satisfying to discover community reports helping other gamers identify tweaks that turn games from Borked to Gold. It's been wonderful to see these reports serve as a resource to Valve and game developers which forwards positive improvements across the ecosystem. At the core of this is the effort of contributors who are testing games and writing reports. Up to now, for the purpose of expediency and keeping infrastructure costs low, the data behind all of this has only been accessible by visiting the site. With the site relaunch effort complete, I've had time to improve upon this.

In the spirit of open data and all of the benefits that come with it, I'm happy to announce that ProtonDB now provides exports of its report submissions! The database and its contents are released with an Open Database License (ODbL) v1.0 + Database Contents License (DbCL). The initial export can be found on a new data repository on Github and updates will be posted there regularly.

Privacy is an important factor in such a data release. Contributors: the reports you have submitted are in this publicly accessible database, stripped of any personal identifiers of you. It does not contain any information about your Steam account, nor any unique identifier to you. The system information you provide when contributing reports is not included in this data, but a reduced summary of your system is (i.e. 'cpu', 'gpu', 'gpuDriver'). If you have other questions or concerns about this, please let me know on Discord.

If you're interested to learn more about ODbL and the conditions of using this data, here's a very short human-readable summary or the full license.

And, if you're a show-me-the-data kinda person, you might enjoy the newly released Stats page [BETA]! I'll be iterating on this further in the next week, including news posts elaborating on what it tells us about the nicely growing movement of Linux gaming.

Enjoy!
