By the Numbers #1: Taming The Long Tail
November 1, 2018As mentioned in a Reddit comment by /u/mykro76 from several days ago ProtonDB has a bit of a long tail problem, not unlike gaming or the game storefronts in general: the amount of games being played (and subsequently reported) is significantly smaller than the pool of games that players might like to play, if they only knew about them or knew they could play them. This is evident in one of the charts recently put up on the new ProtonDB stats page:
What we see here is that there are many more games that have one or two reports than the remainder of the games being reported. Not only are popular titles more likely to receive reports, niche titles often don't overlap between reporters. These are in a 'provisional' state; ProtonDB currently withholds giving a rating until a game has received at least three reports on supported systems by unique reporters. Currently, although there are 5,216 games with reports, only 1,446 games have received a ProtonDB rating. As the graph visualizes from the space under the line, we have over twice as many provisionally rated games as we do rated games.
And here I'd like to make an appeal to our community: we reporters often do our part to move the needle on total games reported, but it's also important that we move the needle on the total number of rated games, and we can do that by testing a wider range of games. In so doing, we validate others' testing efforts, identify issues sooner for the Proton team, and more generally support a broader array of innovative game development.
To this end, I encourage you to (if you haven't already) log into Steam with ProtonDB and visit the Explore page with 'Library' and 'Lack Reports' filters on. You might discover one of the 944 games that only need one more report to push over the edge! On that page, you can also sort games by the amount of hours you've played, popularity, or user score if you don't find something immediately interesting.
To help facilitate this further, I've just added a variation of this view to the page you see after successfully submitting a report, so that you are given some suggestions on what to try next.
That's all for now. Onward Proton gamers!
