Fullscreen was 4:3 aspect ratio by default regardless of true screen resolution
Switching to windowed mode and restarting fixes the fullscreen aspect ratio issues.
I tried all the official versions of Proton first and they all seemed to result in black screens. I could hear the game audio, but there was no video. Proton-5.9-GE-3-ST did the trick.
