You will need to import your game saves from Mass Effect 1. Find the "Mass Effect" folder in:
$HOME/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/17460/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/BioWare
and copy it into:
$HOME/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/2362420/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/BioWare
Next switch the compatibility to Tinker Launcher and use the 1 time install and run the "MassEffect2Config.exe" found in:
$HOME/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Mass Effect 2 (2010) Edition/Binaries
Use the config app to copy the Mass Effect saves from:
C:\users\steamuser\My Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect
Close the app, switch back to Proton 9 and run the game. You should now see the option to import your old save from the "New Game" menu.
No Launch options are required as this will run out of the box. I only added these launch options as they prevented a graphics stutter I was experiencing.
You need to import your save games from the Mass Effect 1 prefix to the new Mass Effect 2 prefix.
After installing the game let it install the EA launcher and then try to run the game. It will error. Close the game and set the compatibility to Tinker Launcher and use the One Time Install option. Download the NVIDIA PhysX EXE from NVIDIA and run it with the one time install option. Switch back to Proton 9 and run the game again. It will launch.
I would suggest using the "MassEffect2Config.exe" to setup your desired graphics settings. The game runs flawlessly when you follow the giude above using Nvidia GPUs.
Crashes at startup :(
Tried with different versions of proton, tried to run the exe from Lutris, none of that helped, it crashes after the EA launcher starts and very briefly showing the list of EA games. Logs shows a lot of error, not sure if they're the cause of the crash:
Fossilize ERROR: Cannot copy unknown pNext sType: 1000068000. Fossilize WARN: Recording graphics pipeline failed, usually caused by unsupported pNext.
EA App and PhysX makes it not easy to even get close to launching
I had to manually install the EA App with Wine WOW Staging and run protontricks 2362420 physx.
Game will still not launch

tabbing out of fullscreen sometimes lead to the game being invisible when tabbing in again
