The video problems mentioned in OwlBear's review below, using 6.19-GE-2, have been resolved in 6.20-GE-1, so the patched dll is no longer necessary. However, I still ran into the intro cutscene hang.
In the discussion at https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/5195, one user reported that the cutscenes still failed when the game was installed on an external drive. I have /opt on a separate (internal) drive, and normally install my games to a Steam Library folder there. Uninstalling the game from /opt, then reinstalling in the main Steam Library folder in /home solved the cutscene hang problem for me.
Works on newest Glorious Eggroll Proton, Won't work on main Proton until they support VP8 video decode.

Played past the first couple of cutscenes and everything works fine so far. Minor tearing was resolved by enabling vsync.
The Good Life and its demo have some unusual cutscene loading behaviour that not only causes it to fail with a black screen when you start a new game on stock versions of Proton (due to lack of relevant video codecs) but also on the normal build of Proton-6.19-GE-2 (due to http-based cutscene loading).
However the fix created by popsUlfr at https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/5195 works. Copying their customised mfplat.dll over ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/Proton-6.19-GE-2/files/lib64/wine/x86_64-windows/mfplat.dll resulted in a working game for me.
I've played past the first couple of cutscenes and everything works fine so far.
Game uses videos for cutscenes and those are broken. If you have save where you have passed the starting cutsenes the game works fine.
No audio for the cutscene videos
No image for the cutscene videos
Not sure how many videos this game uses and how much headache those will cause.
Reached initial menu, game loads but nothing happens after loading complete
Apparently this might have something to do with the video files, or a missing codec needed to run those video files which is required and wasn't included with the install.
Main menu and options available. Game loads and then black screen.
