I could launch with experimental or recent release proton, and with the recent GE forks, However, there was a strange input delay where holding a button too long leads to the game holding that button far after you let go of it, also the actual racing portion had major input delay. Proton 5.0-10 seems to work just fine though.

Do not need the custom build of proton. It just has some minor potential performance gains.
