Has worked for me right out of the box with the exception of customized controls. Have not experienced crashes or performance issues.
Use the in-game upscaling options.

Install UI mod from workshop
Fix this by installing cryo utilities. Worked well for me and others. See info here. https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/s/8B0wo7k3Td

Consistently crashes in less than 20 minutes on lowest graphics settings.
Unplayable, should not be advertised as anything else.

After playing for 10-20 min. The game will freeze and it will freeze the deck. I have to hold down the power button to force turn off my deck.

Changed it to 30fps cap
The UI gets too big and falls of screen a bit, and characters take up UI space in the skills menu for instance, but between 70% and 80% UI scaling worked for me.
I play this game via Family Share.
Aside from the UI being either too small at 50%-60% or being too big at 70% and up, the game runs quite well all things considered. I didn't have any crashes (not changing my proton setting at all, just the default it selected) didn't experience any performance drops or loading hangs. it ran really smoothly. I tried reloading different characters, different eras, several times all with no issues. I don't imagine it would run well middle to late game, but I didn't play that far.
when going into the actual map of the game, running on native with vulkan, it crashed. locked up the steamdeck itself aswell.

Deck itself becomes very laggy and freezes

The game crashes very often. The highest chance when clicking on portraits but can actually happen at any moment
Very frequent crashes

Custom one to support zoom-in and time controls
In-game UI scaling blocks important commands. Use UI scaling mod. (Disables achievements)
Game crashes when you select a portrait.

Was able to start the launcher, but right as soon as I started a kingdom, my game froze. Had to force shutdown.
Lowered settings to medium, turned down to 45 fps

Capped FPS to 30, it can only hover about ~40 without the cap so not a big deal. Dropped TDP by ~5 (15 down to 10) which kept it hovering around 30 and prevented the fans kicking in when zooming in and out of map.
You can install a better scaling mod, but it will disable achievements.
The game will freeze for a few seconds during certain transitions (e.g. triggering a major event), but sometimes it will freeze and just not recover until you hard reboot the Steamdeck.
Performance has improved a lot in the last year, if you run it via Proton (e.g. not the native Linux build) you can quite easily get a steady 30fps even when docked to 1080p or even 1440p if you turn a few settings down. Loading can be slow and freeze up every now and again, but very playable.
Increased UI scaling
CRITICAL: Install "Improved UI Scaling" mod from workshop to be able to scale UI to larger sizes without issue!
Critical: Install UI Scaling Mod for Steam Deck to scale UI without issue!!

TDP limit to 8, FPS limit to 30
Paradox launcher is broken after update. It launches, updates, and then never launches again. Switched to Proton Experimental to force non-native version of the game, it fixed the problem.
Installed Better UI Scaling Mod from Steam Workshop to increase UI scale. After that works perfectly in portable mode.
Native version will only launch once, before launcher updates and starts crashing. Forcing Proton Experimantal fixes the issue. With Better UI Scaling mod it's a great portable experience.
paradox launcher is FUBAR even when launching the game by tinkering won't allow modding (Which is totally the point of the game...)
Game runs fairly well. Frames will drop when running games at high speeds or with a lot going on. 30 fps cap recommended for consistency.
Game UI is very small in order to fit on screen.
Fixed through mods
Recommed a few workshop mods to help with UI:
Better UI Scaling by Agami: Let's you move more boxes and scroll to see previously hidden info. Have played with UI scaled to 100% without issue. Huge improvement from the regular 60% max.
Configurable News Feed - Updated By FunGaming44: let's you move and rescale the notification box, and a much better notification UI overall.
*I force non-native version because some of my mods have issues with native Linux. You may be able to use the native version if you only use these two mods.
small text. Cant really use ui scaling as it results in some windows being too large for the screen.
Text is very small by default, but UI can be scaled
Missing a zoom mapping
