Didn't end up playing it long and don't plan to since I played it a few years ago and it turns out I'm still burnt out on it, but I did end up trying it for about 30 minutes on Proton and it worked good enough, it was a little laggy but I remember the performance being sub par on Windows too, along with general jankiness

Shift tab / steam overlay doesn't seem to work
Even though the game says it has cloud saving, when I change Proton versions the saves do NOT carry over - so be sure to copy your save just in case
Steam overlay doesn't seem to work but otherwise I want to clarify good news as opposed to the reviews from 9 months ago that the performance issues seem to be gone - at least for me. Max settings across the board on 4k.
Just be sure to back up your saves when you change Proton versions from steamapps/compatdata//pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/LocalLow/BulwarkStudios/Ixion/Saves
It's not a Proton issue but there's a bug that will cause your buildings to be stuck in a repair state for eternity - which also means you can't dismantle them. From this same location you can open the buildings.sav file and remove the building that's stuck. (Confirmed this happens on Windows too)

if the game minimized then it would get stuck minimized until it crashed, eventually this started happening at startup which meant the game couldn't be started. So, there's a lot to unpack here. First of all, the demo and the real game have the same issues for me (some people said they were different). Secondly, this game is horribly optimized and this is exponentially more evident on Linux.
Assuming you've got an absolute beast of a computer to run it though, there's a lot of quirks about this game to get it working right. First of all, Proton Experimental and Proton GE make the game crash 100% of the time upon loading a level for me.
Using Proton 6 makes the game not crash at all for gameplay, but the Steam overlay will make it crash and Proton 6 is very laggy with this game.
The middle ground for me is using Proton 7. As long as you skip the company logos at launch (these will make it crash, I know, I've said crash multiple times already), then I don't have any issues.
As a side note, I can sometimes get it to work using GE Proton if I mess with the forced compatibility but it usually crashes within like 10 minutes even if I get it to start playing, so using Proton 7 is just the least hassle. (Some of the launch arguments don't work with Proton 7 but I just use the same arguments for most games).

As long as the VKD3D_DISABLE_EXTENSIONS=VK_EXT_mesh_shader is set, using proton experimental or proton 7, and disabling steam overlay, good
gamemoderun VKD3D_DISABLE_EXTENSIONS=VK_EXT_mesh_shader PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 %command%
There is artifacting with debris like leaves and rocks, this would be fine except I crashed NONSTOP once I got to the labyrinth because of debris freaking out visually. I had to add the VKD3D_DISABLE_EXTENSIONS=VK_EXT_mesh_shader command to fix the artifacting and fix the crashing in labyrinth
Sometimes the mouse doesn't register if I alt tab frequently, just have to tab back in to fix it
The game is very poorly optimized and they designed it with the expectation that you use an upscalar, if I don't set dlss or fsr to balanced or performance I get like 15 fps as opposed to 70
Frequent crashes if the VKD3D_DISABLE_EXTENSIONS=VK_EXT_mesh_shader isn't set to fix the debris, also GE proton crashes occasionally, and having in-game steam overlay causes issues.
Noted the important information above, only other note I'll add is I have an m2 SSD and the game has a 1-2 minute black screen on launch. If you don't have an SSD, you may need to wait a while for it to start.

No major issues once I set my Proton to 8.0-2. I needed this version in order to alt tab and change windows without the game crashing. Performance isn't great but I've heard the same for Windows.
See notes
Had to disable the in-game steam overlay otherwise it would crash after a few minutes, both with GE and normal Proton
I could use Proton GE but for me it required me to add the launch arguments of
"PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%"
in order to get it to launch. But using Proton GE - the game gets capped at 30 fps.
Switching to Proton 7.0-6 did not require any launch arguments and allowed 60 fps without issues.
Both normal Proton and GE required me to turn off the in-game steam overlay though otherwise it would crash within 5 minutes.
