Doesn't start after the menus.
It asks for personal info, but doesn't actually start the game.
Crashes when selecting PulseAudio.
The game requires using a microphone, but when I select PulseAudio it just crashes to the desktop.
On my machine I was however able to install and navigate the menus.
Works out of the box like a charm.
When you start the game and go for the first race, it will stutter for a while. If you restart the race or start another one after a minute or two, the game will work with zero (0) issues.
In some cutscenes characters take a second to load. Not sure if this is due to Proton or this game being really old.
You have to manually edit a config.xml file to enable controllers. There is no option available in the game GUI, and you can either use the keyboard OR the controller. You can't switch between them on the fly.
The game shows its age, and a really poor PC port.
These are the steps I had to take to make the game playable:
1 - the game wouldn't start until I replaced the "SWTFU Launcher.exe" file with "SWTFU.exe" - essentially executing this command on the terminal:
mv ~./.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Star\ Wars\ The\ Force\ Unleashed/SWTFU.exe ~./.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Star\ Wars\ The\ Force\ Unleashed/SWTFU\ Launcher.exe
2 - The controller wouldn't work, and this probably is an issue cause by a bad porting job. To make use of the controller you need to edit this file:
~/.steam/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/32430/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Local\ Settings/Application\ Data/Aspyr/Star\ Wars\ The\ Force\ Unleashed/Config.xml
In particular, the "IsKBAndMouse" tag, where it says TRUE, replace with FALSE. There is no option inside the game to do this, and you can use either a keyboard OR a controller, according to how you edit that file.
3 - No resolution options are in the game options. Go back to edit this file:
~/.steam/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/32430/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Local\ Settings/Application\ Data/Aspyr/Star\ Wars\ The\ Force\ Unleashed/Config.xml
And change the "VideoWidth" and "VideoHeight" options accordingly.
4 - the game runs at 30 FPS capped on PC. This isn't an issue with Proton, it's the port, which means that solutions for Windows apply. Just follow this section on PCGamingWiki: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_The_Force_Unleashed#High_frame_rate and Bob's your uncle.
May the force be with you!
