A new release in celebration of the Steam holiday sale
December 22, 2021Surprise, Linux Gamers! Riding along in the sleigh with Steam's holiday sale is a fresh release of ProtonDB. Here's the list of changes:
- Reports specifying Experimental for a version, including past reports, are no longer excluded during content refresh. They are also flagged as Tinker reports.
- Notes written for 'Customizations Used' are no longer discarded when specifying Glorious Eggroll for a version, including past reports.
- Older reports are no longer duplicated. Thanks @ArchDuke Zetabyte for spotting.
- Where user notes used more than one hyphen consecutively they were mistakenly converted into em (--- => —) or en (-- -> –) dashes. This was problematic for copy-pasting of launch options. This has been fixed both retroactively and for future reports. Thanks @DarSin for spotting.
- Outbound Github Issue links now filter to open issues. Thanks @NoXPhasma.
- Some disrespectful language is now censored.
- Border style between report renderers is softened.
- Many JavaScript dependencies have been updated for improved performance and security fixes.
- You can now chat with us on IRC as an alternative to Discord. The link is in the footer.
As we usher in the close of 2021, the Linux gaming landscape is looking brighter by the day. More and more games are working. Anti-cheat support has begun to arrive in Proton, improving compatibility for key popular games. Steam Deck didn't make its end-of-year release, but it's not far away now. And even here at ProtonDB, further renovations of the site are already underway, including but not limited to:
- New heuristic for game compatibility ratings
- More extensive 'at a glance' summary of game details, including charts
- Self-service report removal
- Sort reports based on relevancy, determined by 'helpful' voting
- A rebuilt home page
- Steam Deck as a report option
- Formal designation of reports with Experimental and custom Protons (such as Glorious Eggroll)
I hope you're as excited for these changes as I am!
As the year closes out, thank you all of you who have helped this movement by writing reports! Making a website that has such a community behind it really brings joy to my festive little heart.
I'll finish with one more tip of the hat: to all of our Patreon supporters, thank you! Your gesture motivates the fixes and features above and more to come. If you're able to and haven't yet, consider pitching in financial support for your favorite Linux gaming initiatives, maybe even including this independent and crowdsourced home. Come join us on Patreon!
Happy holidays!
