Windowed mode could not be activated
The map cannot be scrolled down or right with the mouse, these mouse bounds are not being detected. It's still possible to scroll the map using the cursor keys.
The game crashes with the latest Proton. Runs on Proton 5.0-10. The screen resolution and mouse scrolling can be improved by using the Widescreen Fix (https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/1762-cleopatra-widescreen-fix/). The game runs great, I'm preferring it over the newer "Pharaoh A New Era" installment.
Change Proton to 7.0-6 version and everythings work just fine. :)
Good to go, however arrow keys for map control. Mouse moves to the left, but cannot scroll map to the right
protonrun %command%
Map movement cannot be rebinded from arrow-keys to WASD, however it is minor
Good to play anyway
loads startup videos, then black screen with menu music.
tried experimental Proton
Game installs and launches, displays initial video intro, but then locks to a black screen before reaching menu.
Alt+tabbing or skipping the video intro also locks it to a black screen. On one occasion, alt+tabbing from the black screen caused the window to get caught in a minimise/restore loop and could only be stopped by killing the app.
Plays as it should out of the box. I am playing the GOG version using Heroic to launch. I set certain keyboard shortcuts to my preference.
Set keyboard shortcuts to different buttons
The game starts normally but the map movement is out of control.
Windowed mode crashes the desktop
The map always scrolls to the bottom right on its own. Moving the mouse to the top and/or left borders will move the map in the intended direction, but upon release the map will go moving back to the bottom right.
Works perfectly out of the box
remember to change game speed and map speed after you start playing
Speed and scroll speed must be changed in games options (70% each)
Flickering of the screen. Had to restart PC.
Created github-issue for Proton.
The game will not launch, no matter with configuration I try. Version from GoG.
tried everything
I used DXVK and DgVoodoo.
To fix black screen/crashing when alt-tabbing:
protontricks -l
to get id of steam gameprotontricks -c winecfg 564530
to launch wine cofnig for pharaoh- Go to
Graphics
tab - Enable
Emulate a vistual desktop
- Enter desired resolution
Alt-tab leaves game with unrecoverable black screen. See provided steps for fix
Use widescreen patch to enjoy high resolution widescreen gaming experience. Download here. I used "Pharaoh Resizer by Crudelios" to create an .exe file for 3440 x 1440 and it worked like a charm
Works out of the box without any tinkering. For a higher res playing experience (optional), use any of the available resolution mods.
Windowed-mode is unplayable
Game ends with exception
terminal output: ... wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 00000000 at address 00000000 (thread 0120), starting debugger... Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x00000000 in 32-bit code (0x0 0000000). ...
Runs great on Steam Deck
The game was just running on very high speed (as other users mentioned) but there is a speed setting in the menu. I'm playing at 70% speed with no issues.
Windowed mode does not work
Did not bother tinkering with windowed mode. Use widescreen patch to enjoy high resolution widescreen gaming experience. Download here. I used "Pharaoh Resizer by Crudelios" to create an .exe file for 3440 x 1440 and it worked like a charm
Solid retro road trip back to Egypt!
Windowed mode does not work, 1080p not supported out of the box.
A Mess
Absolutely borked. Had to ctrl-alt-F3 to get to a terminal to kill it. It made my screens flicker, forced my main one to 640x400, and was generally not a good time. I tried replacing the exe with the one from the pc gaming wiki mentioned below, and it didn't help.
worked straight away, also works with the custom .exe's for different screen resolutions.
The game doesn't reopen after Alt+Tab. Also, there is no way for windowed mode (the one described here doesn't work - https://steamcommunity.com/app/564530/discussions/0/1698294337790538200/).
Had to do a system updated and reboot to get Proton working.
The game runs overly fast to start with. It should be noted that there are speed settings in the menu and the game runs fine at 70%
Game does not work at all
I tried the tips suggested here in the comments (disable dx11, etc) but was unable to get the game running under any version of Proton. Logs always show the following error
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation) Major opcode of failed request: 155 (GLX) Minor opcode of failed request: 3 (X_GLXCreateContext) Value in failed request: 0x0 Serial number of failed request: 281 Current serial number in output stream: 282
Fun old game that works pretty well on any hardware.
Game speeds up suddenly for a brief time and then returns to normal occasionally.
The mouse issue can be resolved by using arrow keys but doesn't feel smooth.
Mouse won't scroll right or down to move view
I used Proton 5.1.0 to play Pharaoh without any problem
Works great out of the box!
Use widescreen patch to enjoy high resolution widescreen gaming experience. Download here, unzip and replace the Pharaoh.exe file by the one with the desired resolution from the archive.
Had to drop the in-game speed to 80%, otherwise working out of the box.
works perfect out of the box, decrease scroll speed and use the resolution fix mentioned in the other comments
The game runs flawlessly as-is out of the box on Proton 4.11-7; no issues with scrolling or anything. However I haven't had any luck getting the widescreen fix to work - it causes the title bar to turn black and clicking any resolution in the options menu causes the entire screen to go black and not come back (but audio keeps playing), necessitating ending the process.
This is an update to my last review.
Following the release of Proton 4.11-1, Pharaoh will often not get past the opening cutscene unless either d3d11 or d3d9 are disabled in launch options. Even when it does get past the cutscene, the display is moved down about a fifth of the screen (cutting a fifth of the display off and leaving the top fifth black) but the inputs are not, meaning you will always click a fifth of the screen below your cursor. This obviously makes the game unplayable. Disabling esync and fsync have no effect, and reverting to Proton 4.2-9 fixes this bug.
Using the widescreen fix has no effect, other than fixing the scrolling bug mentioned before (which is obviously useless since it's unplayable anyway). Another effect of this bug is that the menus cannot be accessed in-game.
I currently have found no fix for this. For the time being, run this game through 4.2-9 using the widescreen fix, and it will run perfectly.
Mouse scrolling doesn't work going right or down, otherwise flawless
I had one crash once, but it seems to have been a one-off. The only other bug I get is that scrolling does not work with the cursor to the right or bottom of the screen, forcing the use of the arrow keys.
Working perfectly out of the box.
The game does not start in any way.
Runs almost perfectly. Scrolling does not work by moving the mouse to the bottom or right ends of the screen, have to use the cursor keys. Possibly related to dual screen setup, or the game using a resolution that is not native to my screen.
Runs perfectly!!!! While in-game we can slow down the scrolling and game run speed by opening the options and changing the values, that simple! This game is not "Borked". Also, the widescreen mode works: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=822513452 Just fallow the instructions and select the greater resolution in the menu.
Problems with scrolling correctly and run speed of the game.
Works great
Game runs very quickly and is very hard to control the camera
