Works well but did have a bug
The first time I had to take on another shape, it would get stuck loading the next section. I was able to wok around it by stopping the game then trying in wolf form before the tiny cute bear thing.
Looking forward to playing more, this is a great Steam Deck game!
It works out of the box with the defout proton choice.
Everything works well with Proton 8, decent FPS even on Epic settings. Only issues I've encountered don't affect gameplay at all.
When returning to main menu, game crashes. This may affect Cloud Saves, but I'm unsure.
Full playthrough with no major issues
I got stuck in environment textures (rocks, trees, etc.) multiple times, requiring a restart to the last checkpoint (these are frequent so it's not a big deal). This issue seems more likely to be a game bug than a Proton bug, but I figured I would mention it since it's the only issue I encountered.
Most of the time the game runs at 40+ fps, but whenever the scenery changes, there are spikes and the game lags.
When the game transitions from different environments (forest to cave, forest to foggy area, etc), the fps drops to 15-20 and goes back up to 40-50.
I've changed a few of the video settings. I'll list most of them for you to get an idea:
- Graphic Settings: Custom
- View Distance: High
- Anti Aliasing: High
- Post Processing: High
- Shadow Quality: Medium
- Textures: High
- Effects: High
- Foliage: High
- VSync: Yes
I've played 60-70% of the game with the steam deck's default refresh rate of 60 fps, but then I locked the refresh rate to 40 and the experience turned out to be more enjoyable. If you want to hit a consistent 60 fps, you will have to tinker more and even change a few of the deck's settings. Personally, this game runs perfectly at 40 fps.
Finished game with some missing cutscenes
Some missing cutscenes
For the game to start properly, you have to delete one movie file and a directory with movies. Go to /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Lost Ember/LostEmber/Content/Movies/
and delete file Mooneye_Reveal_Logo_1920.mp4
and the entire directory MooneyeLogoAnim
. After that, the game starts and works as normal.
Shows some animation and sound then a black screen at start.
Tried on the Deck and on a Linux PC. Both have the same behaviour. Opened a bug report at Valve's bugtracker: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/6003

NTFS Mount Fixes Startup (For Pop OS and Ubuntu)
If you're sharing your steam library with windows make sure you mount the ntfs storage into the media folder than the /mnt/ folder: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/wiki/Using-a-NTFS-disk-with-Linux-and-Windows
No Proton Version Works
I've tried experimental, 6.3-8, 5.13-6, 4.11-13, 4.2-9, and 3.6-9, but Lost Ember will not start up. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game.
Did not start up with a previous library
Previously installed in a windows steam library. It does not load, so it may need to be uninstalled and installed via steam on linux back into the library.
Runs best on Proton 4.11-x, running on 6.x it hangs at cutscenes
strangle frame limiter
Tabbing in and out would sometimes cause the game to lose the mouse. Tabbing out and back in would fix this.
- B0rked with default Proton (6.3-2): Videos aren't playing, game hangs after the intro.
- Plays fine with 3.16-9, but achievements aren't working.
- No issues with 4.11-13.
Proton 4.21-GE3
German audio fails with Proton 4.11-13 and is still English. So used custom Proton version.
Sometimes flickering shadows.
PlayStation 4 Controller not recognizable.
Crashed sometimes at beginning of first creature takeover with Proton 4.11-13.
As already mentioned Lost Ember runs very well with Proton 4.11-13. But the PlayStation 4 Controller can't be detected and will be interpreted as Switch Controller. Xbox 360 Controller was detected correctly.
Important for German players: The game works a bit better with a higher Porton 4.x version from Glorious Eggroll. I first played the game with Proton 4.21-GE 3 because with 4.11-13 the German audio failed and was still English. But with 4.21-GE3 you can't get any achievements so you have to try a lower version than 4.21-GE3. After beat LE is got all my achievements by switching back to 4.11-13, but for 2 special achievements I had to start a new game and got them within 1 hour.
Since last major update (july 2020) all Proton issues seem to be fixed. Although the developers does not support Proton or Linux officialy they were very responsive and looked into issues we had. Thumbs up!
If you play with proton there is a bug when wolf just remains sitting and you are unable to continue playing.
Worked out of the box with Proton 4.11-11 and X-Box game controller without any tweaks! Nice!
Out of the box, runs like a charm!
Nearly identical to Windows. Some of the dialog advanced a little too quickly, but nothing major. That's the only difference I saw.
Controller not working. Not sure if this is an issue with the game though since I see the same problem with some (but not all) other games.
Proton 4.11 produces glitched textures, but 3.16 is totally fine.
