To run this game i had to
- open steam with integrated graphics (not discrete)
- select proton 8.0-5
- play
Music only plays on the first level loaded, like many people have reported. Sound effects play on all levels.
It's frustrating to see that three years of Proton updates haven't fixed the problem with the music. I was considering buying another Windows game that had audio problems reported a few years ago, with the hope that the audio would be working by now. This is making me reluctant to do that.
Audio stops playing after every level.
The game's menu bar does not show up while in gamemode (gamescope’s embedded mode). This means that you have to go into desktop mode to edit configuration options. There appear to be no launch options for gamescope that change this. However, playing in desktop mode allows the menu to appear.
Have only tried with GE-Proton8-23 and not the newer version. Everything seemed to work out of the box and perfectly.
Works just like on Windows
It feels like the old style Windows game it originally was, changing settings works fine and switching to old graphics brings me back...
It ran fine, you can't change settings though since it doesn't show the options menu on handheld mode. Otherwise it plays fine and is fun.
Loads into a level and then immediatly crashes
Unfortunate music issues, but no other issues were noticed. Plays perfectly fine.
Music only plays on the first level loaded on launch. After changing levels or changing preferences, music no longer plays until re-launched.
Solid experience, works exactly like it does in Windows
Works perfectly.
Changed A to be Enter; any button will do as the mouse and enter key are the only two control methods needed
Some noises were quieter than others
Game is a retro educational game; resolutions and wide screen support weren't a thing for edutainment
game works great other then on level 32 crashes which isnt the worst considering all the levels are great and skipping that level solves it
seems to work fine but level 32 the game crashes after abit easy fix is just skip level i mean all the levels are fun so missing out on one isnt the end of the world
It doesn't seem to run if you let Steam chooses a Proton version and with Proton 7, it seems to give an error when you starts playing
It was great to see the game go from a scambling mess, to looking fine, to working but having to remove the music to just working. The game just works now with GE, no arguments needed
This is a quick test, there could be bigger problems later! But it runs fine now!
Music works and loops on original and windows tracks but only for the first one played. Changing music packs, switching stages, restarting, dying or progressing to the next stage causes music to stop until the game is relaunched
Sound effects work perfectly however, even after playing for a few levels
Performance suddenly tanks after about 27 minutes of gameplay with lots of frameskip and unresponsive (keyboard) controls. Only happens while actually playing the game without standing still, even on 1x screen size with no animations and smooth scrolling disabled (Win theme). Relaunching the game gets around the issue but it's quite annoying especially on the longer stages
Using dgVoodoo2 fixes it, and I found it easier to test for by warping to level 147 "Force Field" and pressing DOWN to idle on the conveyor loop
Game crashes if music plays for a little under 6 minutes, regardless of music pack and across different levels/tracks. A workaround is to stop the music in advance by i.e restarting the level
The game freezes on launch for exactly 30 seconds if a paused audio stream is up (tested with mpv) before continuing as normal. Doesn't freeze during level transitions or while playing though, and only happens on Pipewire (no easyeffects/wireplumber); Pulseaudio is fine
I wanted to add this to "Tinker Steps: Other" but didn't get prompted for it: Installing dgVoodoo2 for DX6 by following the instructions on PCGamingWiki and changing the launch parameters to WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ddraw=n" %command%
(per issues for other games on proton github) fixes the performance issues over time (didn't encounter any even after an hour), fixes controller support through Steam Input (nonfunctional out of the box even on Windows), and also decreases CPU load dramatically on the game process (130% vs 50%). It does add a watermark though which can be disabled in the config file
Bummer :(
ERROR: P (HRESULT = 0x80004003) window pops up over the game window, clicking ok closes the game instantly.
Broken.
Unplayable on all version of Proton I tried. (Experimental, 7.0, 5.3)
Crashes after initial cutscene with default settings
Basically the into "cutscene" plays ok, but the moment the first level is rendered, an error dialog window pops up, saying "P (HRESULT = 0x80004003)"
Bummer.
Workaround: the game seems to survive loading the first level if you go into "Preferences" and switch to the "Win" theme, instead of the default one. Not sure how consistent that is...
Version 7.1-GE-2 of GloriousEggroll made it playable. Other than the Windows soundtrack not working, the game is playable now.
Default music works, but Windows music doesn't seem to.
Can be installed , but game doesn't start unfortunately
Game wont launch with music. The suggestions to remove all the music references from playcc1.c2g worked. Game runs fairly well following that.
- Open up the game folder: ${STEAM_APPS}/common/Chip's Challenge 1/data/games/cc1/
- Remove all references to music from data/games/cc1/playcc1.c2g
sed "s/music "+\w+"\s*//g" playcc1.c2g -i
Can't change preferences easily as it gives an error. Appears that if you change a preference, update one of the controls (which does work), and then reload the game your preferences will be updated.
The changes that got this game working came from upstream wine, so GE should not be needed for long.
6.21-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Glorious Eggroll
resource monitor shows higher utilization than on windows, when the game is running.
If i left the game running, but didn't interact with it, it would crash within 10 minutes, but not if I started a level and then left the game running.
Game is playable after removing music from the game's script. Did not test level editor. Settings can be copied from another computer.
Game tries to play MP3 files in a way that apparently doesn't work in proton as of the released version. The level pack for the main game includes a script that, among other things, tells the game which music to play on which levels. Removing the instructions to play music lets the game run.
- open up the game folder: ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Chip's Challenge 1/
- remove all references to music from data/games/cc1/playcc1.c2g.
sed "s/music \"+\w\+\"\s*//g" data/games/cc1/playcc1.c2g -i
or the following find string, with regex, for vscode, and replace with nothing:music "\+\w+"\s+
Game made my laptop run a bit hotter than it should for such an old game.
Preferences, cannot be saved through the game, a dialog box appears explaining that there was an invalid argument. oddly, controls can be configured and saved, and both sets of settings are saved to the same file.
I had to modify the game data itself to get the game to work.
I had to edit the file: 'nplaycc1.c2g'
found in this folder: data/games/cc1/
and I removed all instances of: 'music "(whatever)"'.
The game then ran fine, just without the music.
No Music due to modification made
1 second black window, then crash.
Installed fine. Popped open an all-black window for a second before it crashed.
Game doesn't start.
Installs successfully but cannot launch the game
This version isn't the original 16-bit game. It requires .Net to run
Game Won't Launch
Steam DirectX install fails.
Steam tried to install DirectX for first time play, but it never completed. After stopping the install and trying to run the game again, it just crashes.
Proton-5.9-GE-3-ST GloriousEggroll
Makes game able to boot to the level editor. You can even play a level you make. Trying to begin the main game via the menu causes a crash. Same with exiting a level you're testing in the level editor.
Completely missing sprites.
Game crashes upon completion or exit of any level, and trying to play the main game.
Game is unplayable.
Further than the others, but still not working
I was thus far unaware of GloriousEggrolls' Proton fork, and when I learned of it, I decided to try giving this one a go. The good news? It loads! You actually get a window, menu, and some background.
The bad news? It's still unplayable, and nothing else I tried managed to get it working. Maybe something to keep an eye on, at least.
Won't run on proton 5.0-7, 4.11-13, or 4.2-9. Won't run on Steam Linux runtime. Won't run on wine3d11.
Does not launch.
Does not start.
Closes immediately after the "Preparing to launch" dialog. Doesn't even spawn a window.
